D&D 4E What do you think of the 4E background to demons & devils?

I'm digging it. Especially because it implies that the Implacable Horror role will revert back to Demons, rather than Far Realms creatures. Because that's what Demons ought to be: the monster everyone *fears*. As far as I can see, the whole reason that the Far Realms caught on was because Demons...

D&D 4E Some thoughts on 4e magic from a designer

Good catch! I like this. Especially for Fighters. Hurry up, May!

    Dragon Dungeon Little Nitpick. :)

I recommend that every human on the planet immediately: open Adobe Reader Go to Edit | Prefrences Go to Internet Uncheck Display PDF in Browser It makes life so much more convient. Oh, and I agree: zipping a pdf is pointless and irritating.

    D&D 4E 4E Devils vs. Demons article

Man, I'm rocking with this! And I get to gloat, too: I just posted a day or so ago a post that we didn't know whether Succubi as Devils was good or bad because we didn't know the context. Now we do, and they slot in as Devils perfectly (as someone upstream put it, a Carnal Demon would not seduce...

    3 Wizard Foci, 3 defenses

I'm getting a vibe that says: 3e: 'unnamed' AC -> 4e: AC 3e: 'touch' AC -> 4e: Reflex Defense They'll be tightly tied together, but not the same. AC will probably be described as Reflex + Armor/Natural Armor. I'm also going to go out on the limb and say that Shields will add to Reflex rather...

D&D 3.x Fond Memories of ENWorld and the 3E Launch

Actually, google *is* a portal (news.google.com) for usenet. And I do go back to rec.games.frp.dnd (not that I've ever been an active poster on any board ever). There's always been people who's immediate reaction to a given change is 'I won't ever do that!', 'Broken!', 'Ruining the Game!', etc...

OOTS 487: Their Concierge Service is Heavenly

Probably filled with awkwardness, chagrin, and unpleasent revelations. I think we can assume that, assuming she ends up in an upper plane (what I'd expect; she's terribly, tragically wrong, not twisted and evil). I'm thinking mandatory classes in Remedial Goodness And Humility, here :p I doubt...

    Critical Hit with Fireball!

Man, your DM was a JERK. Just imposing a flat 50% failure rate on all actions would have been a less severe penalty! I think I'd have either quit, or switch to a character class the DM didn't blatantly job! :(

[Rampant Speculation] The First New "Power Sources"

Better: Think 'Dark Crystal'! Now, that's a good use for gnomes! :p

With these things in mind, straight-up character conversion won’t be possible. PFFT

I think the operative word here is 'straight-up'. In other words, you won't be able to build a direct, mechanical conversion for everything (that's worth anything anyway). But in many cases, you'd still be able to re-create the character; and for some builds there will be some obvious...

    Playtest Characters

Do we actually have a confirmed race count? 'cause I can't remember anyone saying we'd have 7 races! Fighter - Martial Defender Cleric - Divine Leader Wizard - Arcane Controller Rogue - Martial Striker Ranger - Martial(?) Striker Warlock - Arcane(?) Controller(?) (?) because we really haven't...

    Critical Hit with Fireball!

I don't know. Ask me after they actually provide something to speculate on! All we really know here is that he could crit with a spell; and he appears to have been surprised by the one-tap kill. I'm trying to fill in some context, because the tone of the thread seemed to be 'ZOMG! Broken!'...

    Fireballs are attacks rolls now?

I suspect it's more that as you gain in power your Fireball spell expands outward; that way even low level wizards get to chuck a fireball, but high level wizards chuck a *monster* fireball! Consider also that Rich's Warlock/Wizard may only have 1 or 2 Wiz levels; and the Tomb under the Tor...

    Critical Hit with Fireball!

Hmmm, interesting: but let me throw out some thoughts I haven't seen in this thread. 1) in the Tomb under the Tor playtest, the 1st level Wizard lets fly with *something* that got described like it was a Fireball. 2) Rich's character is a Warlord/Wiz; at last mention in the 6-8th level range...

    Swordmage Class

I think that's mostly because Psionics isn't core, and therefore can't be used in non-psionic books (like PHB or Complete Adventurer). If Psi makes into a core book (PHB 2?), then it would make sense to make Monks & Ninjas as Psi weilders.

    Filling Class/Role combos

Well, Song has been used in the past as a power source--but I'd be tempted to build a Bard as the TrueName/TrueSong (TrueTongue?) Leader class.

    Filling Class/Role combos

I'd forgotten that suggestion. Admittedly, I find a Grenadier, well, odd for D&D and maybe a bit stretching to be a Martial Controller--but having said that, I can see that as a potentially viable Martial Controller.

    Filling Class/Role combos

I have to agree on one of these: Monk as Controller seems non-sensical to me (the primary way I see people use/discuss the 3e monk tends to be as 'wizard-smacker' or skirmisher style fighters--both Striker roles). I really doubt that we're going to see classes for every role * power source...
