D&D 5E (2014) What level would you make this spell effect: Unlight

This spell would definitely need to require up-casting to affect higher-level effects. Possibly with an ability check. Potential rules-lawyer arguments that "That guy" may come up with: "Extinguish" means "put and end to" or "destroy". When a creature that is a light source itself is...

D&D General D&D, magic, and the mundane medieval

I think that was their point. If just anyone can learn magic, then it is indeed a learned skill and can indeed multiply exponentially until everyone is a wizard. If magic is less common, and being a PC-level wizard is something fewer people have the potential to become, then this will have...

    D&D 5E (2024) Longsword finesse when used 2H

Both one-handed arming swords and rapiers weigh over 2lbs. That isn't that much lighter.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D One Changes to the Rogue...

I wouldn't either. 2h Fighter with GWM does not have massively increased damage over the baseline. GWM + PAM + Precision attack human variant BM Fighter is a much more optimised character and their damage can be much higher.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D One Changes to the Rogue...

That is what I'm hoping to happen. All classes brought to the same general level rather than the experts and martials only having a couple of hyperoptimised builds able to compete with a generic full caster.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D One Changes to the Rogue...

They aren't arguing the math, they are pointing out the reality of how most people play. Using Sentinel, or Haste and then holding your action and similar strategies are known by a lot of Rogue players, but actually utilising them is a thing mostly done by fairly heavy optimisers. Yes, the...

D&D 5E (2024) diving into feats & expert classes for what they are as a whole rather than what they aren't

Hex is on the spell list for Bards. It isn't a signature spell for them unless you choose to make a bard focused on it.

D&D 5E (2024) The more I think about it, the least I like class groups.

The Ranger playtest document already demonstrates how they work around this: The Ranger is allowed to access Fighting Style feats despite not being a Warrior class. The grouping is there to apply general rules, but I'm pretty sure that every class is going to have specific exceptions to some of...

D&D 5E (2014) Barding for War Dogs; 6000gp for Plate Barding???

The cost of the materials for Plate armour are only a very small fraction of the cost of the armour. The armourers who will be making it will probably be used to fitting specific patterns to a humanoid, and will have to create completely new pieces designed for that particular dog. Add to that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Longsword finesse when used 2H

I don't see a balance issue: I removed the Finesse requirement for Sneak Attack for 5e and I've not seen any thematic or balance issues. We will probably have to wait for the Warrior playtest to see weapon rules: so far only the change to the Light property and the interaction of Heavy with GWM...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sharp shooter/Great Weapon Mastery

I like the change, but I am going to be keeping a very close eye on the development of the other classes. I do not regard the changes as "Making martials weaker", just making a couple of specific builds of martials more in line with the others. Hopefully now martials can be balanced against...

D&D 5E (2024) How many classes do you want to see this edition?

A couple more I think. Current 13 classes might be hard to incorporate together to remove any given what we know of the way oneDnD is structured. Plus I'd like to see one or two more classes that aren't represented currently.

D&D 5E (2014) Have we misunderstood the shield and sword fighter (or warrior)?

I think this is one of those occasions where the 5e ruleset conflicts with observable reality, so you need to consult your DM for their decision on the matter.

D&D 5E (2014) Would making powerful enemies immune to cantrips make the game more or less fun?

I think that they're saying that it will exacerbate the 15 minute work day rather than solving it. Out of all the reasons that spellcasters are problematic in 5e, their cantrip damage is rarely an issue.

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

I think perhaps you should refresh yourself on the discussion we're actually having. It is not specifically about melee. We are talking about the Fighter being able to impose disadvantage to hit opponents other than themselves if they land a blow. That is a control and support ability as...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Damage per hit. I am assuming a 66% (2/3rds) hit chance for the Fighter. Paladin I'm assuming 66% hit chance at 5th level (same as fighter), but only 60% chance at 11th level (to represent Fighter having +1 from their extra ASI). Indeed. At 66% hit chance only 4 of those extra attacks hit...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

OK. It looks like you have changed the comparison to only base class, no subclass. So let us have a look at your maths: 6 more attacks a day at 5th level, compared to 14d8s worth of extra damage. Fighter needs to average 15 damage a hit to keep up. That is seriously impressive at 5th level...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What does your "complex fighter" look like?

The old UA weapon feats had effects that occurred when you have advantage and hit on both dice. That would still require advantage, but be a compromise between the ease of just needing advantage, and the rarity of needing a crit to get the special effect. As you say, this would need additional...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

I'm not sure I see that. The Paladin is still swinging the same weapon, with the same Fighting Style and damage bonus as the Fighter. Even looking at the Battlemaster and assuming the apparently rather unusual full two-short-rest adventuring day, the point at which a Paladin gets more d8s...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]What does your "complex fighter" look like?

Another option would be adding an element of randomness but without requiring something as rare as a crit to do something interesting. e.g. The class has an "Opportunity die" which increases as the class levels that is rolled at the same time as their damage roll. If the roll is even, they...
