    Goodman rebuttal

Well, for what it's worth, FLGS have been living and dying since the industry began... True, but Amazon is very nearly a complete competitor with nothing much to do with the FLGS, whereas Paizo should conceivably want the FLGS to at least look on them somewhat favorably. It's like how SJGames...

    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

Well, I think it's because of the numerous people who declare that 4E is the worst thing ever since it's like WOW. Yes, these people do exist, and they are annoying. I was talking the other day with somebody about the free RPG Day and where to go to get stuff around here, and this other guy...

    Goodman rebuttal

Of course, he could have gone out of business for reasons completely unrelated to 4E, like the landlord raising the rent, a medical emergency, bad gambling debts, winning the lottery...any number of things.

    Free RPG Day is Saturday!

Yeah, but it was just a short adventure from what I could tell. Of the products on the table, it was easily the least impressive. I didn't bother with it since I knew it'd be released on PDF shortly and that the quality difference would be minimal from printing it out. Assuming I wanted to...

Conventions: please tell me about them.

Since I'm a bit lazy, I'll just point out this page: Wikipedia's page on Gaming Conventions Another place to look is for authors and companies whose products you like. It may be worth going the extra mile to a convention where people you want to see are going to be. Also, don't inhale the air!

    One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure --on 3pp product "glut" 4e / 3e

If so, then I humbly disagree as my experiences don't quite mesh with that.. Sure there is a great deal of information available, I've actually read some of it myself, and discussed it with the owner of the FLGS. This doesn't make it easy. It's still a good bit of work to keep up to date, not...

    One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure --on 3pp product "glut" 4e / 3e

? I'm not sure where you're going here. Is there some point you're trying to make that I'm missing? Mine was explaining that dilemma that FLGSs are in. I'm not sure what yours is. Could you clarify? As for buying online. I don't like it, and I rarely do it. Reading reviews just doesn't...

    Free RPG Day is Saturday!

I went to the local game store that was doing the event, they had them on a table in the back. Picked up one of everything they had except the Hollow Earth thing which was the only one left. Already given the Geist and the Rogue Trader away to somebody else.

    Goodman rebuttal

Indeed, there was a period where pretty much anything could be published and put on a store shelf. This turns out to not be so desirable to retailers, as they end up with junk on the shelves they have to throw away to make room for stuff that will sell. Distributors don't like it because they...

How do we WANT magic to work (Forked Thread: ... medieval war...)

I don't like magic as a science in games. I know ideas like the Law of Similarity and the Law of Contagion, among others have some appeal in stories, but I'll be honest and say I don't enjoy such things in games. It just seems to get in the way of the fun.

    One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure --on 3pp product "glut" 4e / 3e

Well, having spoken with the operator of one of the FLGS, she's had the problem for years of having stuff on the shelves that won't sell, so she knows that buying stuff the customers don't want is an issue. The problem is twofold. First, the distributors don't care about her, they'll try to...

    WoW and 4e - where's the beef?

I disagree completely. 4E is coherent, consistent, and otherwise nothing like my mother. But maybe your mother is totally different from mine. IOW, not insane.

    One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure --on 3pp product "glut" 4e / 3e

It's funny how this situation reminded me of the early days of Video games, and a comment somebody made about Hula Hoops, and how if a company had been able to patent them, they'd have been able to come up with reasons for folks to keep buying them. I dunno. I do know that most of my shopping...

How the heck did medieval war work? And other rambling questions.

Bwa-hah....Derlavia, politically complex. That gives me such a laugh. The whole set up is so clearly intended to fit in for WW2 that it really is overly simplified in order to well, work. But I suppose it could be something of an example, though I think it's far too contrived as a Fantasy WW2...

Stunting and the Bag of Flour Connundrum

As you prepare to use your bag of flour....you notice that your improper storage procedures lead to an infestation of deadly blood flies! Or....have some Wizard research a spell...Bake. Fun to turn that flour into Bread. And if you're feeling mean enough, there's always the Flour Explosion.

What about the Anglo-Zanzibar War? 38 minutes long, but still a war!

Are you participating in Free RPG Day this year (2009)?

I'll be going, though my preferred store won't be hosting, another one that's reasonably close is.

    AD&D is not "rules light"

Unless...you add new gestures! Paper-rock-scissors-lizard-Spock anyone? Of course, the real important thing is to be very clear on the rules, as anybody playing Fire, Water, Sand would be well advised to remember. Especially if your opponent is a dragon.

    Done buying?

Pft! I stopped buying before 3.5 came out. And I'm sure there's some grognard out there saying he's never bought anything since they changed the wizard Logos.

    Free RPG Day is Saturday!

So what game systems are represented here? Looks like a couple of dice, and a few different ones, with WW and WoTC 4e, but I'm not sure of the others.
