I know the hints are not the encounter. So… what is the encounter? To me, there doesn’t seem to actually BE any encounter. I never said it was the only way to define an encounter. I said that for D&D, “Encounter” has a specific meaning… as we can see by comparing what the DMG defines to the...

You really “cannot fathom” why anyone would want to skip past the more boring aspects of play? All these discussions we’ve been involved in over the years where people have discussed their preferences… and you “cannot fathom” someone’s preferences differing from yours? Do you like reboot...

Sure, sure! Bardic Inspiration, Rage, Reckless Attack, Channel Divinity, Wild Shape, Second Wind, Action Surge, Martial Arts, Deflect Missiles, Lay on Hands, Natural Explorer, Sneak Attack, Cunning Action, Font of Magic, Eldritch Invocations, and Arcane Recovery all agree with you, I'm sure...

I'm not saying either of those things. Just read the bits in italics and you have all the info you need. There's no trick here.

I was explaining that I am not insisting that prep always takes away agency. Just that there's a conflict there. I'm not saying that improv always results in agency. That's not a comment I made. Though I think you equating no prep to a featureless desert doesn't really work, because a GM could...

Well, what if you needed far more specific maps? What if you or your players were not satisfied seeing the same maps again and again? How do you come up with a very specific map if the need for it came from the players going off in a direction you didn't expect and so haven't prepared for...

Well yes... I have a hard time believing that living on any other planet would be better than Earth. They might. Which I would think, partisanship aside, most folks would say makes far more sense as a term. But they may call them something else. A superhero RPG may call game sessions "issues"...

It's not irrelevant to me, though. That there are things out in the world, hinted at in some way, does not turn those things into an encounter. I never said that GM prep MUST ALWAYS mean less player agency". I said there's a conflict there between the idea of needing prep and players being...

I'm not saying that the conflict cannot be addressed in some way. There are several ways it can be done, and it very much depends on what kind of game you're playing. Many such suggestions... information rich environments, sharing more information with players, removal of gating info behind...

I normally punch out when people start quoting the dictionary. But in this case, I'd instead like to quote the 2014 DMG. Page 75 Location-Based Adventures 6. Plan Encounters After you've created the location and the overall story of the adventure, it's time to plan out the encounters that make...

I didn't say an encounter had to include a threat. I said the example you provided... tracks of a potentially hostile group... consisted only of a potential threat and nothing more. It's not really what I think people would consider an encounter. It might lead to one... perhaps the GM has an...

Nope, encounter is what I meant! It has a pretty specific use when it comes to RPGs. Certainly no more or less confusing than “moves”. No, I get that. I spent plenty of time as a DM creating encounters of all kinds. I absolutely understand the usage… but interestingly, it’s not one I tend to...

If you don’t understand that there’s a conflict between the need for prep and player agency, I’m not going to try and convince you. The way you’re engaging with the idea… “not now and never has been”… certainly doesn’t indicate an open mind.

Well as I said, for many games, I wouldn’t ever think of those as encounters. It’s not defined in any way other than as a signaled threat. You realize you’re defending jargon here, right?

It does seem to be a bit of a conflict! I doubt we’ll encounter a satisfying answer!

Yes, I’ve already said that I have considered encounters in some of the games I run. But not all. The ones where I do tend to be D&D or similarly structured, where an abundance of the effort is on the GM. Wouldn’t that be resolving the encounter? I don’t expect that the AD&D books describe it...

As I said, I accept that you look at it that way. All I asked was the common courtesy to return the favor and respect that I view it differently. I guess that’s not possible. Okay then.

Yeah, I just went with something where there were obvious hints of there being more to the person. So no difference between a social encounter and a combat encounter, then? Instead of assuming people are posting in bad faith, perhaps you should consider that sometimes wording or phrasing...
