That's too bad. Don't worry, you'll do better next time.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Right? At this point I’m just glad to see real human-made art on products. It might not be my taste, but at least someone spent time and effort making it.

    GMs: When Is Enough Enough?

Mostly the same as you. If there’s a big moment that’s close (say 2-4 sessions), I’ll do what I can to speed things up and get to that moment in 1-2 sessions so we can end on a good story beat. Telling the players what’s up so they can help and know there’s a purpose to skipping ahead. But...

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

Exactly. What’s the purpose of the fight? Is it to challenge the PCs or make them feel awesome. 5E combat is designed so all fights are there to make the PCs feel awesome, i.e. be a cakewalk. If you expect a 5E fight to be a challenge, you have to do a whole lot more work than throw RAW stat...

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

As a referee you have to be aware they exist and be willing to homebrew some stuff. This is exactly why any monster who’s supposed to be a big bad, boss, or meaningful fight in D&D 5E has to have legendary actions and resistances.

What are you reading in 2025?

23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism is good up to a point but he doesn’t go anywhere close to far enough in his critique. And the notion that capitalism can be reformed into anything other than a malignant death cult is beyond naive.

World of Warcraft: The War Within

Here’s to hoping. It’s such a weird double standard. They can and have simply invented lore to justify adding race-class combos throughout the history of WoW but they’re more reluctant to do so in the last few years. We got tauren rogues, for Thrall’s sake. Gimme them undead paladins and druids...

What are you reading in 2025?

To get anything even approaching actual criticism of billionaires or capitalism you have to go a bit further afield than the mainstream. Despite it being purely economics, anything I would recommend could be read as political.

Yeah, they’re close. But driftwood forms aren’t quite what I’m looking for.

Goodman Games: Our Efforts Have Been Mischaracterized

It’s a 45+ year old badly-done city setting from a niche publisher within a niche of a niche of a niche hobby. It’s not a prominent anything. More than likely the parties would have to start by explaining what the hell D&D even is to the judge. “That thing the kids do on Stranger Things” would...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Quiet players do exist. Spotlight hogs do exist. I'm running a Daggerheart playtest and I'm having that exact problem. Every time the PCs roll with Fear or fail I make a move and pass play back to the PCs. The same player repeatedly took the spotlight every single time until I put a stop to...

    Minimalist and One Page RPGs

All right. Here's a partial list of amazing minimalist or one-page RPGs. 50/50 by John Harper. 2400/24XX by Jason Tocci. Matrix Games by Chris Engle. Freeform Universal by Nathan Russell. Risus by S. John Ross. Over the Edge 3E by Jonathan Tweet and Chris Lites. Mausritter by Isaac...

    Minimalist and One Page RPGs

They absolutely are better for that reason among many others. Minimalist games get out of the way and let you stay with the fiction far longer than heavier systems. Over the long haul that lets you develop more character and more story rather than worrying about +1s, they don’t break when you...

    OSR Why B/X?

Sort of, but not really. There's a lot of cruft to the later mechanical additions as well. Domain-level play is a common add-on to many OSR games, so I doubt that's the problem. I, sure. But not C and M. Most likely it's because B/X is lighter, cleaner, and simpler which seems to be one of the...
