D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Almost all of the invocations that are cast X once per LR using a slot are crap even if the party can expect to have no SRs in a regular basic. If anything they are objectively worse when you have less slots per day. Blowing a invocation on casting bane once and it still eats a slot is just bad.

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Yea I'm done. For those who actually want to run good games with player engagement that is beyond the surface then I suggest finding ways to use the rest system, or lack thereof, as a place where you can add reward as much as place for potential loss. Party decides to push on with half...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

What are you talking about? Pathfinder 2e has a much shorter lifespan than 5e and is already wormed up to being the second most popular system used which is impressive for any system. Not to mention the majority of 5e popularity has nothing to do with the system but their ability to capitalize...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Without support from the books yes that's basically the problem.

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Because without some baseline to judge it all off of they're basically gambling with no idea of the odds. If taking X short rests increase the odds of failing a quest or otherwise prevent reaching the goal they have to be aware of that fact to make an informed decision. So you need some form of...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Fair but in most cases the decision to start the process usually has some active element(s). Most tables add a rest button for the lack of a better term to give players a reference point.

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Because it has no start until it ends. So things like inspiring leader or using HD which have a set parameters on use after rests are completed are in conflict with the natural flow of what rests are.

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

I tend to purposely seek out people who disagree with me about conceptual game design because it's good for actually discovering better ways of running the game. I can make sure games using a bad system are fun but I'd rather have a fun game with a good system. Tell me when a short rest has...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

If your defense to the resting system is the DM has sole authority when it comes to making rulings then why would you be adamantly against talking about adjudicating a ruling about the resting system when it doesn't work for the millions of the other people that are using the system that it...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

No it's flawed in general but most never see it because they don't run it as the rules present it. So it's not a issue from a play standpoint rather one about design. It's poor form to dump more work on the DMs and declare it a successful idea. The biggest hurdle 5e has is the player/DM gating...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

Most of which are irrelevant to those criticisms? The popularity and fun of this edition isn't a byproduct of it's resource recovery system. Resting/ resource recovery is janky in 5e and was drastically changed 10+ times before releasing so the playtest wasn't that extensive for it's final...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

I always recommend DMs to disregard the DMGs ad hoc suggestion on the ratio between rests because its such a shifting relationship that they didn't implement any balance into the design phase of 5e. It's basically trial and error for each table which sucks at first but eventual it pans out.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monks and Magic Items.

Magic items are poorly implemented in 5e to begin with. Trying to keep the same style mechanical impact from past edition for legacy reasons leads to massive swings in impact. It did take them a long time to add additional items that were directly more impactful for monks than other classes.

D&D 5E (2014) Silvery Barbs, how would you fix it? Does it need fixing?

Aye good idea for a feature if it was just not another good spell option. I get the setting book is all about it but man they love slapping ideas on the spell table. This seems a perfect PBK hot patch.

D&D 5E (2014) Silvery Barbs, how would you fix it? Does it need fixing?

The only issue is that they can realistically stack. User cast shield and then an ally can use SB to stop that one crit that happened to land. Might be expensive but if that attack could shift the encounter then the value skyrockets. Anything with a nasty rider comes to mind. Sort of like the...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't Short Rest classes *better* in "story-based" games rather than dungeon crawls?

The entire idea of resource recovery based on time in a game that doesn't actually track time has been a thorn in the system for as long as I can recall. This was made worse in 5e durring the design and testing phase because there was never any actual focus on balancing between the different...

D&D 5E (2014) Silvery Barbs, how would you fix it? Does it need fixing?

mind sliver and UW should stack it because of the wording of SB is replacing the roll within the save rather than rerolling the save as a whole. It's still the same ST as far as either is concerned. It's one of the spells like shield that can prevent the trigger from actually occuring. Which is...

D&D 5E (2014) Should healing magic be based on HD or not?

Nice then to could just have a set hp per level for each class and we have something.

D&D 5E (2014) Should healing magic be based on HD or not?

Constitution does have an inverse relationship with Martials in 5e. Unless you're going full HP sponge or have subclass features that are based on yourcon modifier there's very little reason to raise it past 14 or 16. Which is probably where it started. I think I've only seen two PCS with...

D&D 5E (2014) Should healing magic be based on HD or not?

Yes it is more difficult to pull off in a digital media platform. Of course I think there's a lot of nuances that failed to translate well to that medium. I don't mind running 4e online because the system supports that type of codified play.
