Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Is Almost Upon Us! Discuss What You Want

More of what they've been doing. But no time travel please. Unless they want to save Captain Pike and make him a recurring admiral for the reboot of the original series. If they use this model I'll be ok with one last abuse of the space time continuum

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

More rules like the rough stuff in the wish spell. Roll to see if you can ever do it again. What if by creating a demi plane th caster were somehow bound to it and when the caster spent too long away from it they and the demiplane diminished. What if clone or simulacrum took a permanent...

    GM fiat - an illustration

Assuming we are talking DND. Dm gets to mangle or change the rules anyway they see fit. The my world has little magic and the mage will only get his spells when I say so being the most normal abuse of the rules. D nD was built so that DM could build the train while it goes down the track...

    Wheel of Time S3

I've stated before I have a cognitive dissonance problem with the books in my head clashing with the TV show storyline. But at least 50 percent of those books could be removed from the story and you'd lose almost nothing. (And I loved them but it's true). Also several story lines that just...

    Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again (Spoilers)

Why I said the spirit of the book 😄 which made seem crawling through a field of broken glass a preferable action

    GM fiat - an illustration

So this line of thought could be applied to nearly anything in game. Those who say it can't happen are wrong. The guy running the game can do ANYTHING behind the screen. God X makes BBEGI unable to be hit. Boom rolling die 20's in combat pointless. But the alternative is rules with less...

    Rules for Romance in TTRPGs

So get 20 people together and try to nail down what romance is......then you'll begin to understand why it will never be fully fleshed out in rules

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

Anything, with the caveat that the bigger the effect the bigger the consequences.

    Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again (Spoilers)

And I think this guy is dead on on why in some ways the story falls a little flat.

    Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again (Spoilers)

No spoilers but it seems to have captured the spirit of "la Miserables" the book. And that's not a good thing for a super hero movie.

D&D General My player did the bag of holding + portable hole thing and got sucked into the Astral Plane. Where is he?

exactly one hundred years from anywhere. After spending one hundred years traveling till he finds a portal to wherever you want him to go, Then roll or select 1d3 flaws from the insanity spell table and tell them to play them as part of thier character. time passes for the character but...

Dice with character...when is using them cheating?

I'll point out to players that the dice don't seem to be random. If they want we can do an extended test. Luckily I play with a set of friends these days and my rules lawyer who is as hard on herself as anyone would catch it before I would and they'd just change dice. True story I had a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

And if it were that effective a cabal of evil mages would after being shown how it works do it times 10 and overrun the world. I love the Dispel magic thing, with the simalcrum having to stay within 5 ft that's a very nifty solution. Good Catch. It's like a line of magical domino's...

D&D General Why grognards still matter

I'm more likely to buy supplements that have some cool idea I haven't seen or a module that I like that could be incorporated into a current game. Especially when the world take's all my prep time. I think WOTC misses the mark by not having a virtual gaming store where thier stuff is for sale...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

Honestly since the simalcra are simply illusions of snow and ice given partial reality and not real beings, if a mage in my game did that, I'd rule that having the simalcra cast wish to let an illusion of themselves break the rules of magic would require the mage to roll the wish roll for...

You're approached by a Hollywood exec...

I'd love to see Larry Niven's Footfall done as a one or two season series on netflix. Aliens with superior technology but lower numbers land on the earth and start taking it over because they've had to flee thier planet and come to take ours. The book does a great job early on making you see...

oh yes that would be awesome. I haven't thought about those books in years. Would be an awesome Gamma World setting as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

and yet it works. I'd argue the bad design of DND at high level pretty much makes either giving the martials powers the books don't have or giving out magic items to fill the gap necessary. Note there is almost no difference between the two different options mechanically except magic items...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Do Higher Levels Get Less Play?

I do it all the time. works fine. has never unbalanced my games. This is only a problem in magic item light games where the DM is trying to control everything or play a magic is rare game. In that case yep you have to figure it out yourself. any other situation it works fine.
