    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

It does not rely on stat minimums. I've explained in detail how it doesn't rely on stat minimums in 5e either. What about this are you not getting?

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

To quote Inigo Montoya, 'You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.' Simply saying my argument is not a rational argument is not itself an argument. You haven't actually addressed the substance.

It actually is pretty great. They have a system for balancing races: Halflings are compensated for their small size with extra development points for things like feats (talents) and skills. So Halflings don't hit as hard, but they are more well rounded than Trolls.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Did you miss the part where I explained why this is incorrect? In 5e up to Tasha's, a Half-Orc started the game with an inherent Strength bonus, which ensured the strongest starting Orc was stronger than the Strongest starting Elf, and the Orc reached maximum Strength before the Elf. So it was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Under the current system (before the Tasha's changes), Half-Orcs started the game stronger (higher max strength) and could reach maximum strength faster. This didn't mean the strongest Orc was stronger than the strongest Elf, of course, but at least it meant that Orcs were on average stronger...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I don't find it nonsensical to want the words to match the numbers. In fact I would say it is nonsensical to tell players Elves have 'keen minds' when in fact they're just the same as any race in that regard. I also don't find it nonsensical to say, 'Other games do it better, and here's how...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

In what sense do Elves have 'keen minds' then? Or Intuition? Or any of the rest of it?

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

The ship is still in the port of Rolemaster and other systems, so it can be done. And until these changes it was true in D&D still, at least at character creation, where the strongest Orc was still a bit stronger than the strongest Elf. The current changes just cut the last cords connecting the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Perhaps my greatest problem with the end of assigned ASI's is that it breaks the connection between the description of the race and its actual mechanical benefits. Here for example are some of the things that the PHB says about Dwarves: --It says that they are 'hardy'. But they're really no...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I am trying to think of all the official Wizards sanctioned adventures, and it sure does seem like the vast majority are set in the Forgotten Realms. Someone can probably give a full list, but off the top of my head i think of: --Tyranny of Dragons --Out of the Abyss --Princes of the Apocalypse...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I actually agree with almost everything you say here. I agree that we shouldn't let players make unreasonable demands. This is why I support keeping assigned racial stat bonuses. If you want to play the strongest character possible, play a Minotaur, not a Halfling. If you recall, it is not me...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

The new edition of Rolemaster (RMU) does this too, and I though it might help to explain how Rolemaster successfully separates race from culture. Race in Rolemaster gives you a range of mechanical advantages and disadvantages, including stat and save (RR) bonuses, hit point bonuses (more for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I honestly don't see expressing my opinion as disrespectful. I personally think that Morrus does occasionally show more disrespect towards posters than I ever do to him. Take a look back through my posts -- I'm not someone who really flies off the handle or starts insulting people. I never go...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

That's a great way to begin a post if you want to promote respectful dialogue. If that's what you conclude from my comments, then you've misunderstood the problem, as well as the logic behind my example. D&D measures strength primarily by the stat, and the racial bonus to strength primarily by...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I and my players want to proceed by accepting that Minotaurs are stronger than Halflings, and so the strongest Minotaur will be stronger than the strongest Halfling, at least at level 1.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I'm really not sure where you're getting the sense that I am trying to deny you a right to a conversation. We're just talking about the rules of a game, and we each have a right to an opinion. You yourself express strong opinions at times; don't we have the right to express ours too? I'm not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Yes, but so are other players. If your strongest Halfling is stronger than the strongest Minotaur, then the player who wants to play the strongest Minotaur -- stronger than any Halfling -- does what? You're avoiding answering the question. We are talking to each other. And I'm asking: if you...

Yes... that's actually the etymology of bilious -- from 'bile'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

The assumption is not that 'Minotaurs are always stronger'. It is that Minotaurs are stronger on average. If you have an Elf that is stronger than the strongest Minotaur, doesn't that prevent the player who wants to play a Minotaur that is stronger than the strongest Elf from playing the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

It is all about preference. I would prefer Strength to work the way it has always worked. The maximum strength for a strong Elf at creation would be something like 15 or 16 (point buy). That's still far stronger than the average Elf, or even the average Minotaur. That seems sufficient to me...
