D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

This kind of thing comes with the (FR) territory. The PCs always have to handle the big threat because the major movers and shakers are too busy handling the Even Bigger Threat Nobody Knows About (tm). Hindsight 20/20 but that was an opportunity for the party to help find out why her powers...

    D&D 5E (2014) Neverwinter 5e

I guess it depends on how much work you want to put into converting. If it were me, I'd leave the pocket of spellplague in Neverwinter so I could continue to run the campaign as-is, perhaps culminating in the elimination of the plague at the end of the campaign. Dead and wild magic zones...

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks Realms & Sundering

I am in the same boat as a lot of the folks here. I'm in the process of wrapping up the Icewind Dale sundering adventure and will be starting up Dragon Queen soon. I don't have time to read all the novels, but it would be nice to have a synopsis of what's actually happening in the world to help...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs: How do you handle purely combat-focused groups?

As others have mentioned, create situations where the non-combat resolution might end up being more rewarding. Perhaps instead of wiping out an enemy it can be turned into an ally against an even greater foe? This came up in my game recently. A random encounter with a lone, angry stone giant...

D&D 5E (2014) What is WotC working on now?

It's a little rough around the edges, but it exists: http://cheezedoodle96.deviantart.com/art/MLP45E-Dungeons-and-Dragons-With-Ponies-490872927

    D&D 5E (2014) How do royalty die in D&D?

Saw the ghost of an ancestor, aged 40 years. Their hearts couldn't take it, unfortunately.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Master FEAT

Many of these "make weapons/shields better" feats also granted proficiency in the playtest rules. I'm a little annoyed with how stingy the final rules are with weapon proficiencies.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's D&D's closest equivalent to buzzard-people?

As others have mentioned, Nagpa are probably the closest. I got a lot of mileage out of 4e Nagpa Corruptors reskinned as generic enemy spellcasters: Withering Staff (necrotic, weapon) At-Will Attack: Melee 1 (one creature); +13 vs. Reflex Hit: 2d6 + 10 necrotic damage, and the nagpa pushes the...

D&D 5E (2014) I Am SO Over The "Rootless Vagabond" Archetype

I like organizations, too. All the players in my Neverwinter campaign are tied to the various factions. My PC (for those times I get to play) is an avenger of Oghma, a secret member of this group: The Curators With the demise of Helm, Mystra, and Tyr and the scattering of their respective...

D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

In my last few 4e campaigns: Common items are usually available in larger cities without too much fuss, and the players can craft them freely. No extraordinary components or knowledge are required to make them. Uncommon items are created on commission, traded for, occasionally found in black...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Master’s Guide vs Monster Manuel

Manuel is kind of a jerk but I don't know if I'd call him a monster.

    D&D 5E (2014) [UPDATED] DMG - Villainous Classes Preview

As a lot of people will be coming in from 4e where characters and NPCs were built with drastically different rules, this is pretty important advice. Come off your high horse maybe?

    D&D 4E Recreating the 4e Avenger in 5e

Since I am playing an avenger in a 4e game, and the vengeance paladin isn't really a good fit for the class, I thought I'd try recreating 4e's avenger class as a rogue archetype. Here's the introduction: 5e Avenger (Rogue Archetype) Some religious orders have need of skilled, discreet...

D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat Supplement is online

The only item I think is problematic are the gauntlets of ogre power (assuming they will grant 19 Strength), since that score is attainable through normal means. It seems counter-intuitive that a strong warrior can put on magic strength gloves and get no benefit from them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Disengage Clarification

In the playtest, when you used Disengage you also got to move half your speed. That may be where some of the confusion was coming from. Edit: Should've read the whole thread.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance

This. Also like I mentioned in another thread, don't have the legendary resistance take effect until the start of the creature's turn, if possible. That way a couple of party members might get in a turn while they're able to take advantage of the spell effect. It will help soften the blow of...

Shamanism Domain for 5E Cleric: Critique Requested

With the Monster Manual out I'm going to be updating the language of some of the spirit's stats: Traits (General) Incorporeal Movement: The spirit can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D meets the Walking Dead

This brings to mind Arthas Menethil's story from Warcraft. He was a paladin commanding an army forced to fight against an undead horde. It turned out the entire town of Stratholme was infected and the people would soon turn into zombies. Rather than allow that to happen, he ordered the entire...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary, Lair, and BOSS Actions

I like the idea of giving boss-type creatures the Lucky feat. For creatures with Legendary Resistance auto-saves, as a DM I'd probably delay the auto-save a bit. Maybe make it its own legendary action? That way if a PC tosses a big save-or-suck debilitating effect on it, one or two other...

D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

Personally, I'd add darkvision to the Dungeon Delver feat. That feat is pretty situational already. Adding darkvision would make it more generally useful as well as being thematically appropriate. There was a feat in the playtest which granted low light vision if I recall correctly, so it's not...
