How open are you to trying new systems?

Somewhat. It depends. For rules light system like Cairn, Knave or Mork Borg, very open to try running/playing at least one shot or short few session long campaign. Systems like those are very easy for everyone in group to learn and be decently proficient in them. As a player, i want decent...

For those who have embraced new systems/games, what was the deciding factor?

Me neither. From what i understand, they went in different direction design wise. From what i read (haven't played 2ed), first one is more traditional, more complex, bit more grounded and tactical, while second one is more streamlined, less complex, and more narrative driven.

For those who have embraced new systems/games, what was the deciding factor?

My group had period when we dropped D&D and switched to 7th sea 1ed. We got fed up with classic fantasy. D&d ruleset just isn't that good for no magic/low magic games, nor for more renaissance/age of sail settings. So friend and DM found 7th sea and it fit like a glove for type of games we...

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

It should also be noted, while original run in USA was in early 80's, in other parts of the world, first run was much later. For instance, it aired on Cartoon Network in Europe first time in mid 90's. Unless you were in some specific countries like UK or Germany, CN was only way to watch it on...

Presentation and Rules Are Different Things

PF2 comes to mind. I hate it's layout. But game itself is solid.

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

I voted yes with caveat. I watched it on RTL plus in early 90s. I liked it, but since it was german dub and i didn't understand german then, i didn't really got whole story.

What are the primary reasons your players reject other systems/settings/games?

Limited time is biggest factor. While we do venture occasionally into something new, they are on the very light side of things ( Cairn, Knave, Mork Borg). At this point, 2 systems that we use most are 5e and Chronicles of Darkness. Those are grandfathered in since we learned them back when we...

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

It solid movie. Even my wife liked it, and she's not fan of either anime or Tolkien. Only thing is, there isn't much re watch appeal in it. Unlike old LOTR cartoon or movie, this one is, in my opinion at least, watch once and forget about it.

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

@JediSoth People tend to forget that there was time when we weren't as connected as we are today. You either called someone at home or on mobile if they had them. And it was never one person who called whole group. You called one person, told them where and when to meet and told them to call...

Do you gaming groups that only play on system?

One group i know and play with occasionally, only plays PF1. They know system and setting lore inside out. I ran 5e for them, they tried, didn't like it, that was that. My primary group mostly plays 5e. It's just our comfort zone and it does what it needs for most of our needs. 2 weeks ago, we...

Don't pay the party in gold [article link]

Those sinks are usually just form of "tax" (carousing and stuff like that) if they don't add to story. Resurrection spell is nice and useful stuff, but, i don't think 5e gives us price points for spell casting services, so, how much that costs or even is it available, is for DM to decide. It's...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

They cast enough light for providing decent illumination inside normal room. When we talk about dungeons, that's enough, since you usually don't have big open spaces or long straight hallways. You have rooms, hallways with intersections or divided by doors etc. Even in natural caverns, you have...

    Did the nerds win?

Did nerds win? It all depends on what you constitute as a win. Some things that were considered nerdy have indeed become more mainstream, or more accurate, they made it more commercially mainstream. If you asked HS version of me, win condition would be that my abundant knowledge about various...

Oh, they both are sitting around on watch. One person is actively looking, while other is focused on actively listening with eyes closed. We are wired to rely primary on visual perception. When you shut down visual stimuli and focus on other senses, brain processes them better.

One thing that always rubbed me wrong way is prevalent use of torches. Oil lamps were thing way back in the ancient Greece and Rome. Romans and Byzantines even made metal oil lamps. Sure, you need to carry it, but it still beats torches. And let's be honest, tech in most fantasy settings is way...

Don't pay the party in gold [article link]

Depends also on party composition. Our party is magic user heavy. Wizard, cleric, druid, warlock and fighter/ranger. Very very few needs for consumables ( and potion of healing is dirt cheap) or clerical services. One big thing that people usually save cash for is resurrection spells. Since we...

    New generic contemporary/urban fantasy?

Personally, for urban fantasy / modern fantasy, my go to game is Chronicles of Darkness game line. Core book is enough, but i like Armory and Armory reloaded, also Hunter:TV and Block by bloody block. Last one is specially interesting, cause it deals with reclaiming territory from supernaturals...

Don't pay the party in gold [article link]

In our current game, we just hit lv 8. We have all the best mundane gear. We have enough money. We are currently in the middle of the dungeon and we looted very few things. I think we found chest with like 7000 silver and 1000 gold coins and just went - meh, leave it. Unless it's something cool...
