    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

There is simple reason for that. Fear of the dark (Iron Maiden starts playing in the background) is one of the most primal fears for humans. Cause there are things that go bump in the dark and we can't see them without some method of light (torch, lantern, whatever). And while we can make light...

D&D 5E (2014) Not upgrading? What version of D&D 5e are you sticking with?

Post TCE, but what is and isn't allowed is on campaign basis. For one shots, it's usually everything goes. For anything else, it's a bit (or more than a bit) restrictive.

And if stopping that BBEG's plan is so vital and time sensitive, why didn't king/noble send couple dozen of his soldiers instead of bunch of misfits to deal with it? :D

Don't pay the party in gold [article link]

And for those that enjoy playing A&L, great. Personally, met very few people that do like it, but to each it's own i guess. Pound for pound, gems are better. That bar of gold is roughly 105 carats of diamonds. 12.5 kg of gold vs 21 grams of diamonds (1 carat is 0.2 grams). So yeah, small bag of...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

You can always treat darkvision like NODs. You need at least some light (visible or infrared). In total darkness, without any source of any type of light, you are blind with or without darkvision. Thats why things that live in total darkness should have blindsight, not darkvision.

Don't pay the party in gold [article link]

I tried doing other things than giving gold. But players mostly just want to know how much stuff costs and how much they can get for it. They don't care what type of precious stone, what kind of jewelry or fine art they got. They don't want to play accountants and ledgers. They wanna go out...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Deutz pocket dark lantern is relatively simple, mostly metal, and intended to be buckled on the pocket. Dark lanterns / bullseye lanterns from late 1800s only had one piece of glass in them, that being lens in front that focused light. They were primarily made of metal though and very simple in...

You attach it to your belt. I might be getting old and memory isn't what it was, but i kind of remember that was whole point of bullseye lantern.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

I voted no. I don't mind darkvision at all. It's same as going in with NODs. You see, but it's not nice and crisp like with regular sight. You know what scarier than dark and danky old abandoned dungeon? Well lit, clean, old abandoned dungeon. When it comes to range of darkvision in dungeons...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you do Bastions?

Something like Daern's instant fortress you mean? That one saw some uses over the years. Pair it with couple unseen servants and you have instant base of operations where pc-s have full hotel service (food, lodging, someone to wash and mend their clothes). Or you can create custom spell that's...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you do Bastions?

I usually don't. If players want base of operation, they usually do it by joining some in game faction. My players usually don't have desires for playing house management.

D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

Half elf barbarian with scythe back in early 3.5 days. First, he lost his leg due to failed save vs trap. Then he died in heroic, although foolish last stand vs some orcs.

D&D General Redesigning DnD 5e with no Bonus Actions

That sounds like triggered abilities, like 5e smite (you can do it automatically when you hit with melee). FE Rage- after combat starts, you can enter rage at the beginning of your turn. That's it. When triggering condition is met, you use ability. No action spent for it. Or fighters second...

D&D General Redesigning DnD 5e with no Bonus Actions

If i would ever redesign things, i would just have move-action-reaction. That's it. Rogues Cunning action would fall under move option. Drawing weapon would fall under action - attack. Drinking potion? Action. Some things would just be instant turn on things that don't use actions at all (like...

What Property Do You Still Want to See Get a TTRPG Adaptation

Flash Gordon - comic book, not movie/series version Incal/Metabarons The Nikopol Trilogy Something western themed. Blueberry would be nice for international audience. Decent amount of Bonelli comics could be transported to RPG setting and probably be fairly well received in EU.

    Aging and Gaming

When it comes to scheduling, yes, it's bit harder now, cause we all have less free time. But on the other hand, once we set date, it's on. Unless it's real emergency, no one quits session without warning or sends text 20 minutes before we meet that he can't make it. Back in HS/Uni, we all had...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

Everyone at the table rolls in the open. We have cool custom made dice tower and like to use it. It's fun. We also use white dice with big black numbers for legibility. As a DM i can fudge even with open rolls if i need to. While players see rolls, they don't see stats of creatures.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

In team F2F all the way. Tried online play during pandemic and it just didn't do it for me. Between online game and no game, i'll choose no game. But, for me and my group, our primary reason for playing is hanging out with friends and having fun. Yes, logistics of in person games are harder...

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

@EzekielRaiden Brain fart on my part. Meant to write 1500s/1600s wrote 15/16 ct. I know that plate armor as depicted in D&D is 15 to early 16 century. It's just that my main historical inspiration is from Habsburg/Ottoman wars in the Balkans. For instance, if you look at the depictions of...

D&D General 5e Wands with finite charges?

I did. Even made magic shop that has wand with "pay per use" and prepaid options. You are dirt poor but need that Cure wounds wand? No problem, Wands Inc got you covered. I use old 3.5 prices for wands, so CW is 750/50 , so it's 15gp+3.75 gp vat + 1.25 lease fee, so nice round 20 gp per use and...
