What TTRPG Is Perfect and Complete In One Volume?

Page 3 and no one mentioned WW games yet. WoD/CoD. Pick game line, buy core book, you're set. Everything is there in that one book. Supplements are there, but they aren't needed.

Do you prefer your adventures to be episodic or contiguous?

For short campaigns, contiguous. For long running campaigns, mixed or episodic. When i say mixed- 2-3 sessions per quest and then on to another, with light thread connecting them. With real life and stuff, there can easily pass few months between sessions ( for instance,we don't play from mid...

Worlds of Design: Consistent Fantasy Ecologies

In short, i don't spend time on it. Our main campaign world is based around real life Earth. Animal&plant life is more or less same as in real life. There are very few dragons (5 total). Creatures under monstrosity category in MM are unique, some magical beasts are very rare, some don't exist.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

When it comes to setting lore, there is such thing as too much. Give it enough to create feeling of living world, establish key players and factions, give them goals and motivations, then freeze it. In essence, create opening scene and leave it, players will evolve story trough the game. If...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

I think it aired on Cartoon Network in the 90s and it aired on Nickelodeon. Best intro version i could find is in spanish, but there is also this video about it, and you can find english yt theme song. - intro plus theme song - yt video about cartoon It has this hopepunk vibe mixed with...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Thundar the barbarian. Another 90s gem. That cartoon was fun, with it's post apocalyptic vibe. Also, that reminded me about old French cartoon that has some DS vibes. Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, from late 80s. Desert world, great cataclysm, main character with psionic powers.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

@seebs Yes, you do need to interrupt. Cause remember, assumption is that game audience is 12+. So you use lowest common denominator and treat everyone like they are 12. If you have adult oriented product, you don't need that. Treating adult readers like they are kids is frankly insulting...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Probably cause Mystara is yet another pretty generic fantasy setting in lieu of Greyhawk and Realms. On the other hand, DS is unique and unlike any other setting. And to be honest, i don't particularly want WoTC to touch DS with 11 foot pole. When you file off everything needed to drop it from...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi is proverb that nicely encapsulates hypocrisy of those with power.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Captain Planet was awesome. Green mullet for the win :D I liked that show as a kid. Linka was my girl. We had around same time cartoon with similar environmentalist theme, called "Little flying bears" ( croatian-canadian co production).

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

If hopepunk is answer to grimdark, isn't grimpunk answer to classic fantasy with black and white morality with Big Damn Heroes? One of the things that makes DS unique is that Athas itself is enemy to the players. Scarce resources, scorching heat. Even if you want to be BDH, world itself is...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Well, idk how big that area would be in real life, but we can use Kuwait as an example. It's small desert country, with longest border to border distances of 170 and 200 km, with 9 cities over 50k (4 over 100k) people. You can cram a lot of it in tight spaces when it's few cities and desert in...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@PHATsakk43 Problem with some of cultural norms is that they are clearly against law. Biggest problem with their culture is underage marriage. By law, people under the age of 16 can't be married. Age of consent is 15. Yet, in Romani population, there are still very common marriages where...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Glad you mentioned Roma people. Boy, this will be long one. I grew up in neighborhood with significant Roma population. I speak some language (not Romani Chib, Roma in Croatia speak different language, form of archaic Romanian, called bajaški). They, among themselves, are not unified, they are...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

I love Dark Sun. After Ravenloft, my favourite official setting. One of the reasons i like it it's cause it so much different than other settings. Like someone said, practically game of it's own with 2ed d&d base mechanics. And if it were ever updated, i would buy it in a heartbeat. Not for...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

First off, i would like to thank two people who linked Book of Vile Darkness pdf on DTRPG. It seams that their search filters out mature content if you are not signed in and have mature filter off. Thx people. I liked BoVD as a product. It was first official product designed around evil with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lacking Motivation/Inspiration

I would suggest talking to players. Get their input. Ask them what are they interested in doing, where do they wanna go, what are short term goals of their characters etc. That can give you some inspiration and also direction in which way to steer things.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

On the other hand, TSR didn't have benefit of modern print on demand and digital distribution channels. While there still is cost in making new version Dark Sun, with digital only product, you cut out huge chunk of cost that's associated with physical products. Question is, even with digital...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@Cergorach I know you can't please everyone and there will always be someone who complains. Maybe i wasn't precise in wording, so scratch that everybody. It should try to be as inclusive and non offensive it can be and still be appealing to broadest audience possible. In the end, you can't win...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@Hussar To be fair, product like Book of Vile Darkness (official wotc product for 3.5), can't be sold at DMsGuild cause of it's content clashes with their content guideline policy. I also can't find that particular book in any of pdf stores for legal purchase. Yes, today we live in abundance...
