why hate rpg systems with levels?

It's really just the one player that I'm having a problem with. He howls and whines for more XP and quicker level advancement and is not focusing on developing his character's personality. I love levels because in no other system do I salivate so much when I advance. ;)

why hate rpg systems with levels?

Levels make the "power-gaming" element of an RPG very transparent. A player can ask another player: "Hey, I'm 2nd level. What level are you?" This knowledge, while not "in-game" knowledge, can still affect the mood of the game. In a skill-based system, it is harder for players to meta-game in...

    10 years was too long.

I had no problem with the length of time between 1st and 2nd Edition and between 2nd and 3rd edition. The years just seemed to fly by . . . (maybe it was my young age and I didn't care about new editions). That said, I find myself itching for 4th edition! Why? Well, I think because 3E is so...

How do folks describe the base materials that are *consumed* in magic item creation?

Thanks for that. :) I agree with Rel. A book with these sorts of creative examples (with gp values) would be very useful.

How do folks describe the base materials that are *consumed* in magic item creation?

I've never given this much thought, but how do folks describe the base materials *consumed* in magic item creation? You see, it can't be just mundane gems and 'erbs or what-not because the gp cost for base materials is usually far dearer than this sort of stuff. The base materials would have...

Quintessence - What is it good for?

Dunno if there's any practical adventuring application, but in the 2E Masters of Eternal Night trilogy by Bruce Cordell, the illithids used a humongous dollop of the stuff to encase a small asteroid-craft hurtling through outer space. Thousands of years later, the adventurers find the crash...

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter sphere of flesh be?

Thanks. That gives me a good figure to work with. :)

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter sphere of flesh be?

If I turned a 12-foot diameter boulder into flesh with the Stone to Flesh spell (I might need a couple), what would its hardness and hitpoints be? If the above boulder was still in stone form and someone tried to stop it with, say, a Bigby's Forcefull Hand or a Huge Earth Elemental, what would...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Dear Gary, Have you been proud of *all* of your role-playing creations? Were you proud of Dangerous Journeys? Are you disappointed that it didn't fully mature? Dangerous Journeys was criticised as a very, very complex system. Is this one reason you decided to make LA a simple system? Was DJ...

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder be?

If it had 997hp as we've worked out above, and it fell from the point of max. velocity doing 20d6 damage (the average of which would be 70hps) then the 12' diameter boulder would hit the ground, bounce comfortably off with barely a chip and continue down the hill like an unstoppable killing...

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder be?

A perfectly spherical boulder was probably shaped that way by man. Thus it'd probably be considered *worked stone* and thus the spell would be useless against it. ;) If I wanted a boulder with 100hp (giving the lightning bolts a fighting chance) how big would it be? The size of a basket ball?

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder be?

Thanks for the help. :) Wow, the wizard's who use lightning bolt and summon Thoqquas don't stand a chance. The boulder would roll straight down the hill (I'm guessing it'd take 3 rounds tops) and mow into the surrounding crowd causing many spectator deaths. Hmm. What other means...

What would the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder be?

Just wondering what the hardness and hitpoints of a 12-foot diameter spherical boulder would be? I ask because in the free WotC adventure called "A Question of Ethics" by Monte Cook, there is a Wizard's Challenge in it where the above boulder is rolled down a hill and whoever destroys the...

I've just eaten some Fiendish Buffalo and my tummy hurts . . .

The Dungeon adventure "Test of the Smoking Eye" seems to imply that if the players get hungry on their journey through the Abyss that they can just eat some fiendish buffalo and everything is rosey. Wouldn't there be some repurcussions? . . . I just ate some and have a tummy ache. Is there...

    question for erik mona

There's one deity stat block that I found very interesting and I keep it aside for future use. Which god's that? Iuz! You see, if you're running a GH campaign and your players wanna bash down the doors of Dorakaa and scon Iuz on the noggin, then you should really have the full and current stats...

Is Faction War a good adventure?

Faction War irritated the Nine Hells out of me! It basically says at the end that the "Factol's Manifesto" (an earlier PS sourcebook) was an April's Fools joke! Nothing in it can be taken seriously because it was written by someone who made the whole thing up just to cause dissension among the...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Hi Gazza, After you left TSR, the company released some atrocious Greyhawk material (for example, WG7 Castle Greyhak). Was this a coincidence or a retalitory attack against you? Also, after you left TSR, you finished the Gord the Rogue books. At the end of the cycle, Oerth bites the bullet...

    Let's talk about the AD&D 1e Dungeon Master's Guide

My second-hand copy of the 1E DMG smells like wet horse or old dog. Is this normal?

How many Ioun Stones can you use at once? Also, do they work with other head gear?

Thanks. :) Hmm . . . 15 Ioun Stones buzz'n round my head (one of each type). What a sight!
