How did you convince your group to try something different?

Two things that have worked in our group: Propose a game in a setting or genre that everyone in the group can easily glom on to. I ran a short run of Masks between D&D 5E campaigns. Masks is a teen super-heroes game that does that sub-genre incredibly well. It emulates stuff like Young Justice...

    Picard Season 3

DS9 did that for me. Before people's heads explode: for whatever reason, somewhere in season 6 I felt like I was just watching it because it had "Star Trek" in the name. I just had lost interest. Go figure. But!!! A few years later a friend sold me on finishing up the series and loaned me his...

    Picard Season 3

"Safe mode" is a really good way to put it.

    Picard Season 3

I wonder if part of the problem was changing approaches to acting and directing, especially in Trek production circles. At the time of TOS, being animated and expressive was kind of the way you did things. Part of that is stage training, which was more common back then, part of it was working...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

This is interesting! can you elaborate on what you think those would be, and/or what they would be like? Heck, start another thread if you want! I'm curious!

    Picard Season 3

I feel a little badly that I haven't really seen him in anything else, and I'd be open to suggestions of something he's really good in, because I hear he's been really good in some things. He's just so incredibly dull in ENT. I can't remember a single dramatic or funny or poignant Archer...

    Picard Season 3

I generally agree. I think the season arcs in both shows have felt stretched out and like they were playing for time. Maybe they should try do smaller arcs within a season, or shorter seasons.

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

In general they're just baked into each weapon, so there's only decisions if you can manage more than one mastery per weapon. I think just giving all martials combat maneuvers would achieve similar and more cohesive results.

There is now 880 episodes of Star Trek and 13 movies

It's definitely great time to be a Star Trek fan - and lucky for me, I'm one of them! I grew up on re-runs of TOS, and it was one of those very formative cultural, pop-culture things for me. The show and the fan explosion of the 70s - with novels, technical manuals, etc. - was probably my...

There is now 880 episodes of Star Trek and 13 movies

Seth McFarlane seems to be very talented, but the opening song-and-dance number* he did at the Oscars put him on my no-fly list. I don't engage with anything he's involved in. * TRIGGER WARNING: reference to depictions of sexual violence. EDIT: added spoiler-blocked explanation with warning.

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

I don't play D&D for the verisimilitude, but I do think the rest rules are weird and awkward. Maybe you could replace all that with some slightly expanded Hit Dice rules.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I'm not sure that's what the feat says: Mastery Property. Your training with weapons allows you to use the Mastery property of one kind of Simple or Martial weapon of your choice, provided you are proficient with it. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change the kind of weapon you chose...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

The fact that you can't Cleave with a Greatsword is nonsense. I will probably homebrew these Masteries, so you can pick which one you want for your weapon, within reason, and can have multiple of them. If I'm misunderstanding how this works, let me know.

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

I hope - and believe! - this is true. WOTC has openly stated that one fo the goals of this revised edition is to make the game easier for new players to jump in and play. I'm not sure how far they can take that given the game that 5E is, but the changes they've announced (re-organizing...

Who Actually Has Time for Bloated Adventures?

Oooo, I absolutely need art! I'm kind of all about the art, but I'm an artist married to an artist, so I definitely have a predilection. Visuals are really important for my brain. That said, I don't necessarily need any art printed in the adventure (or sourcebook, or whatever). I will hunt...

D&D 5E (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

Based on what I've seen so far, it feels like D&D 5.25, so I went with "No!"

Who Actually Has Time for Bloated Adventures?

I feel your pain - deeply! I just finished running Tomb of Annihilation, and ran Tyranny of Dragons a few years back, and I am done running that kind of thing. There's so little guidance about how to adjust things, so few questions answered...I could go on about this, but who needs that rant...

I would consider this person's work good art criticism if it weren't full of nitpicky side quests. I think they have some valid points, but there's a lot of opinion wankery going on there.

I can't imagine caring about what it's called, but so far I've liked the playtest material and I look forward to having all these different takes on 5E from which to assemble my own Frankenstein 5E!!!
