How Will The New Tariffs Affect TTRPG Prices?

If you have been eyeing a physical product, buy it now. Like this week. When in hand stock is depleted, some of these products will not get another print run under these conditions. Also, if there is a small studio which you enjoy or wish to support, do so now. It's entirely possible they will...

D&D 5E (2014) DM imposed restrictions to the game (+)

Honestly, it really depends on the campaign. If a given species or class doesn't fit with the plans, I just remove them from the options presented to players. Also as a rule, anything not 1st party published needs approval in any game I run.

    Will AI replace Dungeon Masters?

No, I'm serious. Mods, why is this allowed? This is just a copy/paste from an AI site with no attribution.

    Will AI replace Dungeon Masters?

Why are we letting AI write blog posts now?

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

It's certainly feasible. I just dont care. Needing to track it adds nothing to my game. It's just busy work for me. "Realism" and bookkeeping that make the game less enjoyable aren't elements worth preserving. YMMV.

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

In D&D, sorta. If you have say less than 6 of something, then yes, like say daggers or javelins. You could conceivably run out in a single fight. If you have a dozen or even twenty+, as it typical for arrows or bolts? Not really. A given campaign can change this, especially at lower levels. If...

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

So I would recommend it, as it gives players a heads up to avoid reading the material. Now, if the concern is "If I tell my players which module I am running, they will go out and read it" and they would do so even if you told them specifically so they would not do this, boot them. You don't...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

For me: Gear. D&D wants to make gear matter, but it still refuses to invest any gaming technology into gear systems to get that across.

What Genre Do You Wish Inaugurated TTRPGs?

What an interesting question. For me, it's hard to say. The lines between different subgenres of fantasy feel much less stark than between those in the broad Sci-Fi tent. You can tell Conan stories or Middle Earth stories or stories inspired by Greek myth all in one system much more easily than...

DriveThruRPG Print-on-Demand Prices Going Up By As Much As 50% In The US

I think what's the issue is that, due to this "perfect storm," we should not expect modest increases but instead possibly crippling large increases. A 5-10% hike is bad. a 30-40% jump or possibly more could drive people out of any given Geek hobby. Years ago, I reassessed my splitting my...

DriveThruRPG Print-on-Demand Prices Going Up By As Much As 50% In The US

Basically all Geek hobbies are going to be hit with a sack of doorknobs. Hard to discuss the reality of any of this without it becoming intensely political. Simply put, domestic production doesn't exist to work around tariffs in a meaningful way immediately. It would take time and investment. So...

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

I think part of the reason is that there hasnt been a properly huge pop culture fantasy property until the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films. Sci Fi has Star Wars and Star Trek. Comics carry the banner for Super Heroes.

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

Is Marvel produced by Disney or is it a licensed property? If it is the latter, then it has the issue of any licensed media property rpg, which is a limited production and supported window.

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

(Just responding to the final line, which was a response to "So if you were asked "What is the go to Superhero RPG?" what would be your answer?") The lack of an industry standard is in part why the genre of TTRPG hasnt yet penetrated the general consciousness. Or to put it another way, if a...

Upcoming Superhero RPGs Coincidence or Zeitgeist

So if you were asked "What is the go to Superhero RPG?" what would be your answer? Champions, probably? Yet it keeps slipping in and out of publication. It just feels to me there is always a vacant throne for "Default Superhero RPG." Superhero and TTRPG booms both ongoing over the last decade...

RPG Archive: Lovecraft Country for CoC and D&D

CoCD20 is a real hidden gem in terms of some really great advice and setting materials. Most people get turned off by CoC characters getting levels and therefore getting more powerful than is normal for the genre. I still have my copy and it is still worth a read even for experienced Keepers.

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

I am just realizing that having both spell and character progression use the term "Level" is actually very confusing at times.

D&D General What does "This adventure is for mid-level adventurers" mean to you?

5th to 10th also sounds about right to me. That's a spell level range of 3rd through 5th. 6th lvl and up is "high powered" in terms of escalation of effects. I would have a "Mythic" track at 17+ as that's 9th lvl spells.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why are you still playing D&D?

I went with "familiarity and convenience" but honestly the answer is too nuanced for any of the choices to work, especially with only being allowed to choose two. To put it bluntly: DnD is a good system, in that it is able to do what I want it to at the table. Are there better ones? Sure, in...
