Question about the Witch King in LOTR

Which is exactly where Tolkien got it. Both the Witch-king's death and the march of the ents were basically reactions to Macbeth. Tolkien loved the "no man of woman born" and "when Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane" bits, but was annoyed by what he saw as Shakespear's shoddy development...

    OGL Horror out yet?

It seems to be verging on being out - it's officially due out the week of Jan 5th, but copies were at Dragonmeet in London and a friend of mine in the US claims to have seen a copy there too. So, er, maybe. There's a review over on www.gamingreport.com, which is rather positive even if you...

    Mythic Dreams Modern Spellcrafting

Last time I talked to Chad of Mythic Dreams (which was a few weeks ago), it was delayed because of life stuff but still being worked on.

Any tips on spicing up an ocean voyage and/or battle?

I wrote up a naval encounter generator for an upcoming Mongoose book (book of the Sea). Let's put it to work: 1. The PCs' ship encounters a huge merchant vessel, with representatives of a neutral good merchant's guild on board. However, one of the merchants is Neutral Evil - he has bargained...

Should PCs or the GM run a player's followers, cohorts and minions?

Depends on what the followers are doing. In a big, pitched battle, I'd let the player handle them, mainly because I (as the GM) have more than enough to think about with the bad guys, and really don't want to worry about where Follower #327 is going to move to. Otherwise, the GM should take them...

What are your party's combat tactics?

Remind me not to show this thread to my players - they'll be far too pleased with themselves, as they've consistently used strong tactics. They're chewing up the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil at a great rate - we're about half-way through, and they've only really been overstretched...

Oft-repeated "theme" phrases from your Campaigns and their origins.

Heh. In Cthulhu, we've got "I go to X, takingintoaccounteverythingIseealongtheway", coined by the player who got tired of Spot Hidden checks and visual clues delaying his progress.

    Mongoose's Strongholds and Dynasties

Book of the Sea, due out in Feb, updates the Seas of Blood stuff to work with S&D, redoes the trading rules, and generally makes everything happypeachygood. That said, you can certainly get by with just Seas of Blood.

Eadric et. al. (The Paladin and his Friends).

I was thinking about this. While Knowledge (arcana) is the skill used to manipulate the Web of Motes, maybe Mostin's player is worried that other skills will be needed to interpret the results? What if Mostin can percieve, say, a hyperdimensional entanglement between the motes of Soneillon and...

    State of the RPG Industry

James had been thinking of folding Hogshead before that. I think Nobilis was (at least partly) a last statement about what gaming was capable of, and where it was (and is) falling short.

    State of the RPG Industry

While I agree with 90% of the rest of your post, I'd disagree completely with that. When you're writing for DMs, you know that your material is going to be assessed and filtered by them and the needs of their campaign. There's another layer between the written material and the game, so you can...

    State of the RPG Industry

I think you're focussing too much on the last few months of Hogshead. Plus, interactions online generally don't have much real impact on sales. Of course, if you're arguing that James 'made his own bed' by burning himself out arguing with gamers online, he'd possibly agree with you.

Eadric et. al. (The Paladin and his Friends).

The hilarious bit will come when they all sit down and play Trivial Pursuit. Or chat to the Clavinger again. "What -" said the Clavinger, but she was interrupted by SuperMostin, who knew just what she was going to say. "As you -" said Mostin, but he was interrupted by the omniscient Clavinger...

    What's the quintessential D&D monster?

D&D trolls (and paladins) are straight out of Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions". I'd go for beholder.
