    SoIaF: R+L=J? (Serious Spoiler Discussion)

Is far as I know Jon's legitimisation by Robb goes like this: (1) There's no evidence it was actually written. Jon said he was going to do it. But at no point in the books does it say he did it. He may have done it, or may not. (2) The legitimisation would make Jon a legitimate Stark. He'd be...

    SoIaF: R+L=J? (Serious Spoiler Discussion)

You're entirely correct that Dany wasn't born when the Targaryens were killed. That's an (enormous) error on my part. It doesn't effect the argument I've set out though. We do know that Jon was born before Dany. Lyanna died, and Jon was born, pretty soon after the Sack of King's Landing, as soon...

    SoIaF: R+L=J? (Serious Spoiler Discussion)

This is very complicated, but for the sake of completeness let me spell out the rest of the theory. If Rhaegar just ran off with Lyanna and impregnated her then Jon is still a bastard (through from Rhaegar-Lyanna, not Ned-?), and has no claim over a legitimate Targaryen. But this would make him...

Where are all the fantasy movies?

I've got a new S&S film. Here goes, are you ready: Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria. http://americanworldpictures.com/projects/thongor.htm Thongor - created by Lin Carter - was one of the many "Clonans" that populated post R. E. Howard Sword & Sorcery.

    Recommend Lankhmar and Conan books...

While writing the last message, I forgot to write what I wanted to say. The complete Conan and Lankhmar stories are released in the UK in the Fantasy Masterworks series. In The First Book of Lankhmar & The Second Book of Lankhmar, and The Conan Chronicles: People of the Black Circle Vol 1 & The...

    Recommend Lankhmar and Conan books...

There are seven books in the series - though I wish there were only six - the last is the Knight and Knave of Swords, which is the worst of the bunch. I wouldn't suggest reading in chronological order. They were only sorted into this format very late in the series, so reading it this way isn't...

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God! (Updated: Oct 09/05) Spoiler Free Thread

I'm not sure that those of us not in the US deserve the rap for D&D making a profit. The film needed overseas sales and sales in the US to make money - but wouldn't have made a profit based on either alone - so if we're going down for this surely we should take you guys with us...

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God! (Updated: Oct 09/05) Spoiler Free Thread

For what it's worth, I think the film will be a commercial success: it will sell and will make a profit. I don't think it'll be an artistic masterpiece or will please D&D fans. But that's not really the aim of the game... The first film made a profit - I *think* before it was even released -...

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God! (Updated: Oct 09/05) Spoiler Free Thread

Sorry if this has already been mentioned. But as far as I'm aware the first screenshots (two of them) and the logo for D&DII are available here: http://www.flp.com/International%20Release/ Re: the "where are the LOTR inspired fantasy films" thread, this page also mentions "Minotaur", details...

Where are all the fantasy movies?

This is the fatal mistake of assuming that if something has (a) swords and (b) sorcery, then it is Swords & Sorcery. If only it were that simple! To use an analogy, saying that LOTR is S&S is like saying that if things in England from 500BC-400BC were pretty dark, then it must be part of the...

Where are all the fantasy movies?

I think some of it may be due to a delay in writing, commissioning and making films. The "sprawling ancvient/medieval battle" pics we're seeing now aren't a result of LOTR, they're a result of Gladiator. That gives us some idea of the delay. I also think there's a lot of kids "fantasy" films...

    Best DVD Commentaries

I've never really paid much attention to DVD Commentaries. However, I've just watched the Conan the Barbarian DVD with the Milius/Schwarzenegger commentary - which is an absolutely classic. Are there any others which are worth listening to?

    good sword and sorcery

The best S&S I've read is Fritz Leiber's Swords Series. Read the early stuff (Swords Against Death) first though, as Leiber went downhill as he got older. I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Michael Moorcock yet, except in an off hand comment. Elric is classic S&S, and a must read. If you like...

    Boardgames: Diplomacy!

For the record: I think the Statemate was fairly natural. I don't think France or Italy could have been removed without a chance of Germany or Turkey stealing the solo. I see if I can post later on how I think the game went in more detail.

    Boardgames: Diplomacy!

Thanks for playing everyone. I'm glad to hear so many of you enjoyed it enough to get involved in other games. Also France, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Russia all had perfect commitment (none of you missed a deadline). This is very impressive - thanks for being so dedicated.

    Boardgames: Diplomacy!

Fenris; I never meant to come across as harsh. I just thought the best response would be a detailed listing of official sources of help. I've got to be very careful about commenting upon moves, as I'm in a position where it could influence the game. NMR stands for No Move Received.

Locus "Greatest Fantasy Short Story of All Time" Poll

I just seems to me to be the one that most often gets picked for anthologies, and the one that is most widely known. Strangely enough I like it for the exact same reason you like The People of the Black Circle, it's got everything I think of when I hear the name Conan: a daring theft, an evil...

Locus "Greatest Fantasy Short Story of All Time" Poll

It's here: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10806 Fritz Leiber's done really well with 12(!) nominations. I think this'll probably just end up splitting his vote though.

Locus "Greatest Fantasy Short Story of All Time" Poll

Why The People of the Black Circle? There are some questionable choices of the best work of a particular author in the list (Angela Carter is in with The Erl-King, but not The Company of Wolves?). But I though the R. E. Howard selection was the right one. The Tower of the Elephant is pretty...
