    Boardgames: Diplomacy!

Maerdwyn; I never meant to suggest you shouldn't try the game with people from here! I think that's a great idea and most people here would love it - they just need to be introduced to it. I just wanted to point to a site that makes Diplomacy really easy to play online; with all the...

    The Lions of Al-Rassan Movie

Another! fantasy movie is in production, this one is The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. http://www.empireonline.co.uk/site/news/newsstory.asp?news_id=16495 Has anyone read this? I'm currently working my way through Tigana, and I'm finding it slow, full of introspection, and not...

    Lovecraft, where to start?

I think it's just minor corrections to punctuation, which allows re-copyrighting. I can't imagine it's major changes. I've a related question. Where do you finish with Lovecraft? What's the best way to get your hands on everything Lovecraft wrote? I keep on coming across different...

    Dungeons & Dragons III?!?

They're not shooting it at the same time (shooting's finished on II, and hasn't started on III). D&DII is slated for a cinema release next year, this is a serious attempt at a franchise. Surely they must be aware of the universal derision the first film, and anouncement of the second film was...

    Dungeons & Dragons III?!?

This is old news, but I haven't seem it discussed here. Possibly because of stunned silence. Dungeons & Dragons III has been greenlit. Yes, I know, I can't think why either? Dungeons & Dragons II is in still post production. And for some reason they're keeping very quite about the details. The...

    R. E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft Copyrights, thoughts?

This has been bubbling around the net for a while. I want to bring it up here. In the EU; Robert E. Howard (died 1936) enters the public domain next year (2006). H. P. Lovecraft (died 1937) becomes public domain the year after (2007). This means the Conan and Cthulhu stories, at least so far as...

How to run Classic Sword and Sorcery Adventures

I like the evocation idea. What do you suggest is done about healing? Healing magic seems out of place in these sort of games, what's the best jury-rig for doing without it?

How to run Classic Sword and Sorcery Adventures

Hi all; I want to run a campaign in the style of the classic Sword & Sorcery short stories (Conan, Elric, Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser, etc.). Any ideas? Which source books should I think about getting my hands on for designing the world and the campaign? And any ideas for rule modifications to...

Are Lovecraft's writings in public domain; Cthulu names free to use?

Lovecraft and Public Domain Lovecraft is already public domain in countries with life + 50 years copyright (Canada, Austrialia). Good for them! You can publish anything you want in these countries and, in practice, people anywhere can buy your stuff and have it sent to them through Amazon (and...

    Thomas Covenant Film (merged)

Thomas Covenant Film The Hollywood Reporter reports that a film version of Stephen R. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever books is in the works. http://scifidaily.blogspot.com/2004/12/i-dont-unbelieve-it.html Add this to the list with Narnia, His Dark Materials...

Fantasy & SF from the UK

I nothing original to add. I just want to second the idea that the ones to look for are books by Pratchett & Erikson that haven't had a US release and the Fantasy Masterworks (& Science Fiction Masterworks?) series. There is a lot in the Fantasy Masterworks series, and it's a very good place to...

    Terry Pratchett

There are some thirty(!) Discworld books out now, but Pratchett rarely gets mentioned much on these boards. What do you all think of him? And what do you think of his books? There are some definate changes in style between the earlier and later books in the series. Which are the best?

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

The thing I love about this Tolkien knows archaism, and knows the difference between thee and you. So thee isn't just there because it's archaic. It's used between people who are equals (which is friendly) or to inferiors (which is insulting), unlike you which is formal and respectful. So in the...

Has anyone seen the "Sword of Xanten"

Has anyone seen the "Sword of Xanten" (aka "Ring of the Nibelungs"). It's a made for TV fantasy which is getting a limited cinematic release (in the UK at least), and is reputedly terrible. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387541/

Is "A Song of Ice and Fire" the best epic fantasy since "The Lord of the Rings"?

A Song of Ice and Fire is very highly regarded on these boards, and elsewhere. I'd like to get a feel for how people think it compares with stuff published since The Lord of the Rings redefined the genre. There's obviously room for debate, if you don't think it is the best epic fantasy since The...

George RR Martin Update on his site

http://www.georgerrmartin.com/nextbook.html Where did this talk of writers block (or even deadlines) come from? I don't see anything to indicate that GRRM is suffering from this! He says he's just been busy from other things. The delay from A STORM OF SWORDS is because he had to virtually...

[EnWorld Book Club] The Club Dumas: Discussion.

The Nine Doors plot was all flagged well in advance. Both with Borja's advanced knowledge of the one "true" book. And the bookbinders chapter, where Corso gets the true meaning of the conversation which the reader misses (at least the first time around). I thought Borja's fate was also very...

[EnWorld Book Club] The Club Dumas: Discussion.

Personally, I think that the Nine Doors part of the story line was very well done. It was cleverly put together, in what I thought was a very subtle unshowy way. I think the Musketeers story line was probably needed to raise the level of mystery and suspense in the novel, but I can see how this...

    Neil Gaiman: Badly Overated?

Thanks for the responses. So far there's been (mixed) praise, and the only person who's read Smoke & Mirrors has an opinion similar to mine. I won't give up on him just yet. The praise that I had heard was mostly coming from within the genre. But... I think the relationship between literary...
