    Monsters class/crossclass skills?

Can you, within the rules, change these? It there a "rules-legal" way of, if a monster has: swim, climb, hide and jump, switching these for other skills?# nikolai.

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Elementals

For the third Masterclass we're looking at monsters which are a challenge from very low to very high levels - Elementals (Air, Earth, Fire and Water). So there's loads to talk about. Their statistics can be found here: http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd/srdmonsterse.rtf Previous...

    Ogre-a-Week

I've been meaning to do this for some time, but have never actually started. Hopefully, posting this thread will make me add ogres on sort-of-weekly basis. It's - obviously - inspired by MaverickWierdo's excellent Goblin-a-Week thread. Building a Better Ogre. The standard ogre has the...

    Gamemaster Tactics Masterclass: Beholders

I think one of the interesting things to do would be to try and come up with alternate monster builds. So the standard 15 point buy (3/3/3/2/2/2) would be spend differently and alternate feats would be selected from the 5 slots available. Weapon focus: touch attack, Great Fortitude & Lightning...

Debunking the myth there are no "heroes" in "A Song of Ice & Fire"

To go back to the original post: I've read the series-so-far recently (after reading about it on the boards - so thanks to those who've posting on the topic in the past). I think saying that there are no true heroes, though it isn't completely true, does touch on something that makes A Song of...

Debunking the myth there are no "heroes" in "A Song of Ice & Fire"

If I remember correctly the Targaryens married their sisters/brothers. Persumably this would have kept the family tree suitably pruned! Nikolai.

Why are modules no longer popular

I'm with you all the way Celebrim. I'd also like to add one of my own pet peeves: 6) Standard Monsters. I'm fed up of seeing monster listing which read something like "Snarks 4 (see MM): 8, 10, 12, 7 hp" or copies of Monster Manual stat blocks in the back of the module. There's no reason why...

Why are modules no longer popular

I think the dearth of decent 32 page adventure modules is a great loss (though there are exceptions: like the Forge of Fury). Done properly they can be really enjoyable. There is also work to be done in designing complex dungeon complexes, stating interesting opponents etc. which is hard for DMs...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Beholders.

Beholder tactics I think your suggestions are the right ones: attack, use antimagic as a defense while the party attack, hope you're still around for your next go. I guess this is where the 3.5e Monster Manual will come in so handy. The best arena for combat, as has been mentioned, is caves...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Beholders.

To kick things off: A quickened Blindness (6th level spell slot) can be very effective. Beholders have weak Fortitude saves (+4) so - provided the spell is successfully cast - it stands a >50% chance of working. If it does, everyone gets effective invisibilty, which is very useful as a defense...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Giants.

New Masterclass With Ridley's Cohort's discussion of monk tactics I don't think there's much more to add here. It's also been more than a week since this masterclass began, so the second Masterclass - on Beholders - has been posted. Beholders are high level monsters which have a whole raft of...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Beholders.

The first masterclass was a great success, and the topic of the second is one of the classic D&D monsters - the Beholder. Beholders have a CR of 13, so players could find themselves facing one as a "Boss Monster" at as low as 9th level. At greater levels PCs can find themselves facing clusters...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Giants.

Thanks very much to everyone who's posted. There have been some really good ideas - and I'm proud to say that, since the thread has started, I've participated in the successful glitterdusting and pelting with arrows of an unsuspecting Hill Giant. I'll post another Masterclass in the next couple...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Giants.

Re: Giants' Weapons If occurs to me that shatter could be used to destoy weapons in a similar manner. But it does have a 10 pounds/caster level limit. Does anyone know how much giants' weapons weight. All I'm looking for is a ballpark estimate. nikolai.

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Giants.

What's a cleric or rogue to do? I'm pleased the thread's going so well and it's fantastic we've got the Piratecat seal of approval. There's been a lot ideas on tactics for Fighters and Wizards. With the standard practice being to use spells to weaken giants and then reduce their hit points by...

    Adventuring Tactics Masterclass: Giants.

Spell choice... Here's a question. Is it worth using direct damage spells (Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Cone of Cold etc.) on giants? Or is it better to stick with things like Grease, Glitterdust and other save-or-be-weakened spells. Also, which are the best creature to summon against them. Any...

[SCOOP] Psionics 3.5, The New Setting, and Dark Sun!!

I never really looked that hard at Dark Sun, so I don't have that deep an understanding of the ideas behind it. I do like the idea of a "semi-tropical" campaign world with great deserts and forests though - a more Conan-esque sort of thing. I don't think we need another "quasi-medieval Europe"...
