D&D 5E (2014) Do you find alignment useful in any way?

I would have liked to reply "sort of". I am more interested in Alignment in a cosmological sense, or as it is represented in Michael Moorcock's books. While playing a character, I never felt satisfied with my alignment category and always leaned into Neutral to have better flexibility...

D&D General What’s the most gruesome thing that can befall an adventurer?

Being alone, having to hack off one of your own limbs at it is being slowly consumed by a gelatinous cube containing the remains of your party.

D&D 5E (2014) How the game changes when a DM starts to target downed PC's?

The only time I did this was in a horror campaign in which the PCs were fighting Ghouls who, mindless in their lust for flesh, would pounce upon downed protagonists. However I did this first to a downed NPC ally, quickly changing the mood of the fight. You can bet that the players got serious...

D&D 5E (2014) New Crossover: League of Legends

Sorry, where do you access this? I can't find anything on DNDBeyond??

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's 5e vs Tasha's 5e where do you see 5e heading?

I certainly hope not. There’s a difference between respectfully acknowledging characters with different disabilities versus attacks, spells and hazards that negatively impact or limit our senses or physical abilities. I seriously doubt any disability advocates are trying to get WotC to remove...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

This isn't wholly surprising to me. Newer generations of writers and designers are connected to a far wider group of peers than ever before. It is vastly easier to learn and gain inspiration from others, by example or dialogue thanks to the internet and availability of material (physical and...

D&D 5E (2014) New Drow cultures coming in Starlight Enclave, the Lorendrow and the Aevendrow

Couldn’t they just make the Llolth Drow a particular state under the thumb of a dictatorship? Llolth and her main commanders are Hitler or Stalin or Emperor Palpatine etc Far less problematic IMHO.

D&D 5E (2014) New Drow cultures coming in Starlight Enclave, the Lorendrow and the Aevendrow

After watching that one season of the Dark Crystal show on Netflix, I felt that they could have explored benign underground Drow settlements less focused on Llolth or whatever her name is. It wouldn't have been a huge retcon to just have said: "remember those evil S&M dark elves? yeah they're...

D&D 5E (2014) Allow the Long Rest Recharge to Honor Skilled Play or Disallow it to Ensure a Memorable Story

I'm genuinely surprised that it ISN'T the default assumption for D&D 5e gamers that there's always a possibility of long rests interruptions in dangerous locations. Is this the general consensus in the gaming hobby? That the world goes on pause during long rests? That meta-mechanics trump the...

D&D 5E (2014) Allow the Long Rest Recharge to Honor Skilled Play or Disallow it to Ensure a Memorable Story

Tough one, because I want things to make sense based in the current situation. If players are in the middle of a dangerous dungeon, and the monsters totally know that they’re there, but the players feel that they’ve earned the long rest because they’re out of resources... despite all those...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft: An In-Depth Review

There is something inherently risky about intense social interactions (especially 3-4 hour games) with complete strangers. Something that happens regularly in this hobby. Anecdotally, my experiences with RPGs with strangers or new acquaintances have often led to thoroughly unpleasant...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

I'm loving the Dark Gifts a whole lot. I really like the format and utility. Perfect to my needs for introducing ill-fated powers into a campaign.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

LOL, I meant more about representation of different types of people. There are a LOT of people of color, and the vast majority (like 99%) or heroes are depicted (or at least named as) women. Again, I'm fine with that, but it is interesting.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Got my copy yesterday. Overall I'm quite impressed. It's a solid book. Interesting thing about the art. It's very diverse. I wouldn't have noticed anything if I hadn't read some of the past tweets by one of the main writers. Essentially, there are very, very few representations of Caucasian...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

That's an interesting point. However, I wonder how some over the top gory movies like Peter Jackson's Brain Dead / Dead Alive would be categorized? The gore in that movie was disgusting and comedic, serving no narrative purpose, I suppose, other than showing off awesome practical effects.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Phobias are one thing, of course, but I've read horror stories of GMs suddenly springing topics like child abuse and sexual assault out of nowhere with disastrous results. GMs: get to know your players at least a LITTLE bit before you dive into extreme darkness. It's called social competency.

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

I don't think that's the general consensus here. I believe that folks are saying that it is best during Session Zero (or through regular communication) what sort of scares you're going for. GM: "I'm going to be scaring your characters." VS. "This campaign will scare YOU, the players." I...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

For sure! There are great examples of this (Tarantino and Rodriguez' special film that went from gritty crime heist to something ELSE halfway through). I've also read a book or seen a movie that was very whimsical and light-hearted but with a super tragic ending (which was so poignant...

D&D 5E (2014) Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

Yeah I don't see what's so hard to understand about this. If the GM sells me on a campaign based on one mood, theme or Film Rating (G to X), I'd expect them to stick with it. I like surprises, within reason, but I don't want an Army of Darkness campaign to suddenly veer into A Serbian Film...
