    Dragon Compendium delayed

Yeah. Heck, I played Star Fleet Battles starting in about '83 ... There was stuff on there "Coming soon" list that took at least five years to come out after their first predicted street date, and that was pretty common.

Bookstore treats D&D books like Playboy

"People are stupid. They will believe anything that they want to be true or fear to be true."

Bookstore treats D&D books like Playboy

In the words of Linus van Pelt, "I love mankind - it's *people* I can't stand!"

Bookstore treats D&D books like Playboy

Actually, I checked at this site: http://minneapolisfed.org/Research/data/us/calc/index.cfm and a $20.00 book in 1985 (in the U.S.) would be equivalent to $36.17 now, so that has stayed roughly the same. My brother-in-law got drawn into gaming through Magic, and one of the first opinions he...

No more Star Wars RPG - It's Official

IICE began puclishing MERP stuff in the early 1980's (a couple in 1982 and several more in 1983), and this kept going until 1999, when the relationship was terminated, so ... 17 years. http://asp.merp.com/icemerp.html

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

Thank you. I didn't recognize it because I haven't opened that book in quite a while :) Certainly. But the stats are still space I won't use. Gee, a little of those I use ... but the stuff I don't use looks and feels like filler (fairly or unfairly). Thank you; I have not run this...

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

I don't think that is necessarily a fair statement. I'm not a magaplaya hater, but I personally find the game more enjoyable at moderate levels of play, and I treat these demon prince types as more of Lovecraftian "forces" (defeat the demons by defeating their plans and cults) than opponents...

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

Seconded! Admittedly, I've been subscribing since #78, but you'd make me happier. :)

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

How do you know it is a minority? I really like the Dragon articles, even with stats, but I don't want 1.5 - 2 pages per demon lord in the hardcover of numbers I'm never going to use.

No more Star Wars RPG - It's Official

Yeah, I don't know if anyone remembers the old Marvel Star Wars comics series (currently I beleive that these have been reprinted in collextions by Dark Horse, or something), but the restrictions about what could or could not be done with the characters really killed the strip in its last 20-25...

    Why I Ditched Alignments

I would like to add a #4 to this excellent post, if I may: #4: Detect Lies would not do a heck of a lot of good. As helium3 pointed out, this will only detect a lie if the speaker knows that it is untrue. Otherwise a cleric could cast it on a thief in the dungeon who could test every trap...

    Most useless book ever?

Ah, but I didn't buy Synnibar ... Heaven help me, I did buy a Fast Forward book (Green Races)

Hey, I know an old gamer friend in Knoxville who liked farscape! Maybe he would be interested! Unless ... Rog?

    D&D special edition books

I was actively anti-whelmed by the "special editions". $75? Ha! I would but the cover you suggested, though - that sounds cool. Still, I never bought the 3.5 version, so I don't know what it would take to get me to buy I book I already had. *Maybe* I'd buy a MM.

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

Ah, thanks. I have actually seen very little of either series, hence my cluelessness.

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

First off, I was combining two thoughts on the earlier vampire novels. "Carmilla" and "Varney the Vampire, or Feast of Blood", became "Carmilla, Feast of Blood" in my head, probably because "Varney" isn't terribly intimidating or imposing vampire name. (Hey Vern, .. bla BLAH!) Here's a good...

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

There is a very old set of Peanuts strips in which Lucy is spouting off ridiculous, made-up "fatcs" to Linus, and all Charlie Brown can say is "My stomach hurts." I've been flashing to that strip a lot lately. re: also thread on "medireview".

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

Festival of Blood or something like that? I didn't get that out of Stoker, myself. If the fiends are the personification of evil, then I look on vampires as damned souls that simply aren't in the underworld yet, and so have no real good in them, although they might mimic some of the things...

Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss

Noting that you are saying the modern vampire as opposed to the mediaeval monster, I would like to ask you what you are considering your souces. Respectfully, of course; there was one person on another thread that got really, really upset because I dared to ask for a source. I must confess...

    When did "Medireview" = Medieval???

Some of these I would disqualify as being amalgams of different langauges. It might be addressed on its own, but I am willing (for example) to say that Spanglish is incoorect considered as English (and as considered as Spanish). Okay, I'm actually going to pick one. Leaving out differences in...
