Skill challenges in Keep on the Shadowfell

There is one posted on the wizards site that changes the final encounter of the module.

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

I don't think anyone said it was difficult. It is very simple to change the fluff of a monster. I imagine everyone has their own monsters they have their own emotional attachments to and twists on. Medusa is one of mine. This does not make me irrational or foolish -- it means I am passionate...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Dragons in my games consciously choose their own gender upon reaching young adulthood. AKA, I like to rip off Patricia Wrede whenever possible. I like the hags giving birth! You could do some really neat stuff with that, I think I'm going to rip that off too. First 4E skill challenge...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Fossergrim appear to derive from Norse myth, Rusalka are Russian. They appear to be only slightly dissimilar. Could just be a misprint though. Please let me know if I'm mistaken, I'm going from google and not the actual 1E books. The 3e conversion the Fossergrim from BOZ states it's from...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Er, why is ~"being stuck in the past" a problem? I prefer female medusae. I read the myth when I was five and it was one of my favorites, and that has resonated with me for a long time. I sympathized with Medusa as a tragic character, and I've tried to reinterpret her in gaming -- albeit...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

This I've done, I liked it. It was singular character who had seen Medusa but not turned to stone, and was cursed by her in turn -- she could slowly petrify others if she stared at them and concentrated. The rest of the time she wore a veil. Didn't see much play though, it was in a True20...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Eh, worked up isn't really an accurate description, although I suppose "The Tragedy! The Horror!" may come across as such. :) I simply don't like it, and won't be using it. I'd be frustrated if a DM pulled one of these out, but I wouldn't cry foul. I suppose I was curious how many people...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

This, by the way. Not usually epic-tier though for me. I tend to have Medusa as per the Greek myth, usually done up with some modern variation or another. In one, she was cursed to remain ugly until she could paint someone more beautiful than she once was -- but she always ended up painting...

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Ew, they have? Oh well, from the early results, looks like I'm one of the few bothered by this. So, perhaps adding them was a good call. :) Bummer for me though!

The Travesty! The Horror! Male Medusae.

Per http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36838 In the 4E Monster Manual, there are male medusae! Well, I just saw my first house rule. Those guys are out, medusae are female. How about you?

Are PCs expected to beat skill challenges?

Thing is, it's probably a lot easier to complete the skill challenge once the encounter is finished, instead of during. However, your players don't need to know that -- and it doesn't need to be true, either, for that matter. The DCs and the damage for failing seem very harsh though... that's...

Monster groups, simultaneous actions, and tactical movement

A DM running option 2 would annoy me to be honest. The game is limited by turn-based movement. Moving outside of your turn is due to powers, not fiat -- even if you're a group of monsters. It does save time, and there's no way I wouldn't move all three figs at once, but I'd give them +0, +1...

    Monster Power Recharge

The only plausible argument against this is that the power is a misprint and should read merely :5:. This argument is also fairly weak in my opinion, compared to the speed of play allowed by less die rolls given if only one die is rolled per monster for their powers. Also, as the rules are...

    I miss CG

Here's how you have a ruthless yet honorable tyrant: He's evil. Or unaligned. He acts exactly the same as he did before, but his alignment modifier is less precise. It's going to be ok. :)

    Handing out Adventure XP

You could simplify this a lot I think, in fact maybe even down to a single guideline. Guideline: You receive experience for defeating a monster if you accomplish your goal without engaging it in combat. For instance, if you had a stealth (or negotiation, etc) based skill challenge to get past...

Excerpt: You and Your Magic Items

You just stated that which is beautiful about 4e. This is a feature, not a flaw. If you want to add restrictive fluff, by all means, please do! I'm sure I will be adding some of my own. In 3e I spent a lot of time trying to make things less restrictive, Unearthed Arcana, etc... 4e looks to...

What is your Power source if you multi?

I'd almost guarantee he simply adds another power source and that's that. Shooting martially powered scorching blasts would be a hard fit fluff-wise.

D&D 4E 4E PHB Viewing at Games Plus, what we saw

I am interested in knowing the actual racial traits of the half-elf. I'm convinced the one in KotS is in error or something.

How to explain Monsters new abilities to the PCs

I agree with the player, to an extent. You should describe that the hobgoblins are moving in tight formation covering each other before he swings, not after. If he misses because of phalanx, describing it as you did is good as well. I see this as somewhat similar to not telling the players...
