    Two-Weapon Fighting Rules?

Two weapon fighting is really hard to balance properly because doubling your number of attacks is just really strong. The ranger is balanced around having this ability, while other classes are not. So other classes can use 2 weapons, they just don't attack twice. This seems fine to me, given...

My Game is Tomorrow Night; Help with Skill Challenge

I kind of like the idea of not having it be a skill challenge too. You already have a really cool way for the combat bits to work (good enough that I'd be tempted to steal some), adding in a skill challenge would seem a bit tacked on. If you absolutely have to have a skill challenge, you could...

Great weapon fighter is a "trap"? Forked Thread: I don't optimize.

Agreed, the only time optimization and roleplaying conflict is when there is a conflict between the most efficient choice, and the choice that is most apropriate for your character. Though in most cases it's reasonable to assume that your character wants to do everything he can to maximixe his...

Great weapon fighter is a "trap"? Forked Thread: I don't optimize.

Well that's not quite accurate because many attacks do multiple weapon dice, but versatile weapons only get +1 damage total on these. As a result it's usually much better to be doing d10 then do be doing d8+1. This is what makes the bastard sword feat a much better deal for 1 handed users.

    AC-based Defender Builds

The way a fighter defends is by attacking people who don't attack him. If those attacks are feeble, there is no incentive to attack the fighter. Paladins has the option of using charisma to attack and get attacks that are not tied to weapon damage. It should be obvious why both of those favor...

Great weapon fighter is a "trap"? Forked Thread: I don't optimize.

Part of the problem is just that a superior version of a longsword exists, but there are no superior 2 handed weapons (other then the very specialized spiked chain). If this is changed in the martial handbook it will help make 2-handed fighters better. Though in my opinion, sword and shield will...

    AC-based Defender Builds

Hmm....the 18 dex halfling fighter might be a bit harder to hit under certain circumstances, but considering his attacks max out at d6+3 there wouldn't be much incentive for his enemies to actually attack him. If you want a halfling defender, paladin tends to make a far better choice.

    Healing Potions seem odd

Well I can agree about the 5 minutes of fighting and 40-50 minutes of resting. But are you really only spending 10 minutes of exploration time in between those 5 fights? If the monsters are so close by, why aren't they helping their friends or at least attacking you during those 40-50 minutes...

    Healing Potions seem odd

I should point out that if your using 4 or more rest period at the end of every fight, there is no way that your "work day" isn't going to be several hours long.

Dragon Magazine #365's Character Concepts: Masterful optimization advice by WotC

I seem to remember they also have the fighter/wizard take the power Get Over Here (fighter utility 2) in order to move enemies into his AoE.....ignoring the fact that it only works on friendly targets. With that being said, as bad as these builds are, I'd take one in my party over a barbarian...

    Healing Potions seem odd

I agree that it sounds a little wierd, but it also seems a little wierd that you would have 4-7 encounters in an hour. It implies that the monsters are just sitting there stagnantly in their individual rooms and not making any effort to assist each other. Though I'll grant you some of the 4e...

    Is Stealth the new Grapple?

The occasional person's opinion that stealth is really clear aside.... I think the difference between stealth and grapple is that grapple has fairly complicated rules that were still clearly definied by the book. Stealth appears to have fairly simple rules, but how exactly they are used is...

Warrior of the Wild once per encounter?

Yeah it's kind of a no win situation either way. Obviously it would be nice if the game just had no errors at all, but at this point I know it's not realistic. The good news is that it's not TOO hard for a player to just review the erratta for their particular character and make the...

I know that this is tough for some...

I actually find that people carry less baggage with them going from 3e to 4e then they carried with them going from 2e to 3e just because the 4e rules are so much different. When 3e came out (and well even 5 years later) I had to constantly remind people that just because spell X worked like...

    Healing Potions seem odd

Note that I did not in any way imply there was anything wrong with people using a strategy that works. I was simply pointing out how removing that strategy between 3e and 4e does not punish clever or resourceful players, it simply removed an option that everyone used because of how strong was it...

    Healing Potions seem odd

One other thing I wanted to add is that the classic strategy of carrying around a few wands of cure light or lesser vigor in 3e is not exactly what I would call clever or resourceful any more then buying a longsword for your fighter is. The first person who looked at the level 1 wands and...

    Healing Potions seem odd

Well I'd say it's far better DMing to set up the encounter so that the players would like to rest but can't manage to and win by the skin of their teeth anyway. But it may take some experience for the DM to achieve that. But I'd say allowing the players to pause the game to rest any time they...

Warrior of the Wild once per encounter?

It is definitely a major pain that that the PHB and MM are such a minefield of eratta. It would be almost impossible for any but the most experienced and dedicated player to avoid making mistakes due to not realizing something in the book was outright changed. Even still, given the choice...

    Warlock, Shadow Walk and Stealth

Well the thing with the warlock is that you can only hide when you have concealment and in some cases the warlock will only have concealment at the end of his move. This makes it pretty obvious what space he's in :). It's kind of like when the rogue hides behind the only tree in a wide open field.

    FR Preview-Sword Mage and Genasi

Well assuming a 7 point shield, the average soldier hit does 2.5 damage. While it's true that this is getting through the shield, it's also true that this damage is low enough that the soldier is for all intents and purposes out of the fight.
