D&D 5E (2014) Do you find alignment useful in any way?

For the most part I would agree, but we've had at least a few times where True Neutral has been described as actively changing sides in a fight to maintain "balance", and Chaotic Neutral as the alignment to give to madmen, so there have been times it's been endorsed by the official material, at...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you find alignment useful in any way?

This poll has been interesting. A significant amount of people like alignment, or I guess, find it useful. I do hope that alignment if kept around would stay similar to how it used in 5e, mainly not having a huge mechanical effect on player characters. No restrictions for character classes, that...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you find alignment useful in any way?

For grand cosmological forces, maybe? But for the most part, no not really. I especially dislike it as a way to describe individuals and as a class "limiter."

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I know you replied to two of my posts, but I think this is the better laid out argument between the two, so I actually wanted to address it. I think the argument that a shorthand, or jargon, on how to play a NPC or monster could be useful, so that argument for alignment is compelling. That...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I dunno, ImagineGod. When is D&D no longer D&D? Is it alignment? Did it happen when THAC0 was dropped? Maybe it was when we abandoned gender maximums, Race as Class, or, I know, when we went past having more classes than Fighting Man and Magic User? If you want to argue the usefulness of...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

Yaeahh, I see that we've gone to removing alignment will destroy the soul of D&D. I suppose we should should quickly bring back THACO too.

Not once have I argued HP are realistic. So I'm not really sure why you keep saying I am ImagineGod.

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

The original system is probably the most coherent. But the most widely known is probably the system from 2nd edition. Which, as you have said yourself, is flawed. Ultimately, these flaws haven't been fixed, and that is why I suspect WotC is slowly moving away from the system. It's funny...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

You can reduce something to 0 HP and knock it out, at least with melee attacks, so no, you're actually wrong about not being able to neutralize a threat without killing it. Regardless, I've seen far less arguments about hit points then alignment, so I still don't buy your argument that they are...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

That still doesn't refute my point that hit points, while unrealistic, are easy to understand and use. You have hit points and you are not dying until you have 0 of them. For the purposes of the game, it works. By contrast, Alignment is not easily understood. Which makes it's use in the game...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

Hit points and Alignment are a bad comparison. HP are not realistic, but they are simple to understand and clear in how they work. Alignment is not clear and not realistic. While they can be used as a tool in certain circumstances, I'm dubious that it works any better than any other way to...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Revised PHB: What Subclasses Makes the Cut?

If I could, I probably wouldn't be opposed to something similar. I'd probably go War Magic, Scribe, Bladesinger, Some sort of Enchanter/Illusionist mashup(Beguiler!) and Necromancer if I was doing a bigger rework. Maybe Diviner too, it's got some cool mechanics.

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Revised PHB: What Subclasses Makes the Cut?

    1) I agree the Assassin is not great mechanically. That said, I think there is a player base who wants an assassin option, and it's easier to just have an assassin for them. If I can't do a revision on it though, I'd replace it with Mastermind or Inquisitive. 2) I felt that Swarmkeeper wasn't...

D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Revised PHB: What Subclasses Makes the Cut?

So, going with the premise, here is what I would do if I was in charge. I'm also working under the assumption we could possibly tweak some mechanics for the weaker subclasses, so I'm choosing more on theme than power level. Barbarian: Totem Warrior, Ancestral Guardian, Storm Herald -Going all...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I feel like the alignment discussion is going slightly off topic, but as a tool, alignment had issues. Could WotC tried to fix them? Maybe, sure. But we've had 5 editions of D&D now, and alignment and what it means hasn't been clear in any of them. 3rd edition had Zeus as Chaotic Good, and a...

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

Yay, another debate on Alignment! Even when it's gone, the mechanic still ends up doing what it always did, which is cause people to argue over it. Really, though, do we need it for the Relentless Killer? It pretty much describes what it does in the description.

D&D 5E (2014) Can a hasted bladesinger cast a cantrip with the haste extra action

I doubt it is overpowered if you allow it. Though I do find it funny that with the Paladin, Hexblade and Bladesinger if you use this interpretation, Haste works absolutely the worst for the Fighter and Barbarian.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

Conan is definitely not level 20. Him and Valeria had trouble with one dinosaur in Red Nails. If he was 20th level, he should have been able to deal with it easily. As for the topic, I'm not sure if there is much else I can say. I think martials(well, except the Rogue) need some out of combat...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I actually dipped out of the conversation for a bit when the talk was all about combat numbers because Fighters can contribute in combat thanks to good damage and decent durability. The problem is that the class has basically no tools for anything that isn't a straight up brawl. They can't...
