    D&D 3.x problem spells in 3.5

Enervation. BZZAP! -1d4 levels. No saving throw. It gets ridiculous at higher levels, when you can throw a maximized enervation for a full 4 level drain. Losing 4 levels (no save!) takes almost anything out of the fight.

    D&D 5E (2014) Custom game elements

I did up a couple of caster feats as we played our game... something that allowed energy admixture, and allowed the caster to reroll one damage die per damage roll (but had to keep the second result). Worked out nicely.

D&D 5E (2014) What would be your preferred format for the core rules of 5E?

For what it's worth, I started this way. Mind you, I picked up the game at a garage sale. I thought it was going to be a board game of some sort. I was glad to be wrong. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next and the Character Builder

I would love to see a character builder. However, there are a few key things I want to see: Houserule support. It's easy, just allow the option to "create a feat" or "create a class" or "create an item". Or even just allow someone to manually adjust the numbers on the final sheet. No...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wondering Monsters 12/12/13: Mapping the World

I really want to see squares in dungeons remain 5' rather than 10'... It's been the standard sizing for a few editions now, and it'll just make things more confused if things are changed now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore Archive : 12/9/2013

Well... I like it. Honestly, I found 3rd edition's million moving parts to be frustrating, while I found 4th edition's class paths to be stifling. 5th Edition's focus on driving down the middle is exactly what I'm looking for.

More fun to search for traps by throwing the gnome.

Fun with D&D in Retail Sales - Round Two

    Haha. Good one. ;)

Fun with D&D in Retail Sales - Round Two

My department sells electronics, including cell phones, cameras, home phones, microwaves, mini-fridges, stereos, and GPS devices. No TVs or computers in my section though, those each have their own section. No video games either (which would make some of those terms really easy). :)

Fun with D&D in Retail Sales - Round Two

I work in retail sales. A large part of my job is to chat with customers and help them find the products they're searching for. Well, today I decided to see how many miscellaneous D&D terms I could slip into my regular sales banter. Some of you might have read about my first go at this...

D&D 5E (2014) Bestiary, NPC casters and proficiency

Good catch. I think with most casters, they list an attack bonus to use, this is likely an oversight. I would give her the +3 for Wisdom and a proficiency bonus... I think it's +2 at level 5. +5 seems reasonable for a foe like that.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L for November 18

Remember that invisibility is limited; it doesn't last as long, and it doesn't allow you to do other things while it's active (casting spells and attacking breaks it). But being invisible ought to trump a feat that you can take advantage of all day long, any day of the week, no matter what...

D&D 5E (2014) XP For NPCs With Class Levels

Yeah, this is true. That might be the best way to do it. In addition, you might find an NPC who already casts spells around the same level, which could save you some work. :) I've been tinkering a little bit with monster design, and so far, modifying existing beasties has provided the best...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L for November 18

Spells should trump feats, I think. Take the invisibility spell. Someone with invisibility cast on them ought to be stealthier (albeit temporarily) than someone who took the stealthy feat.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Players: What would you be playing/buying if PF didn't exist.

Heh. I would have picked that up, but my snarky banter detector is in the shop. I'll have it back and working soon. :)

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Players: What would you be playing/buying if PF didn't exist.

I didn't think pemerton was out of line with his post. People are allowed to like 4th Edition, right? It's not like he was bashing other posters or systems in the process.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Feel Hopeful about 5E (and why I think it may be closer than some think)

I'm with you on this one. My group consistently says the playtest feels like 2nd Edition. We cut our teeth on 2E (in the later days of 2E), and 5th edition is shaping up to have a nice blend of streamlined mechanics and flavorful options.

Is BECMI the Best D&D Mechanically?

Oh, I see. You're talking about bounded accuracy where you're always trying to hit a certain range of numbers on the d20 roll, whereas I'm seeing it as smaller math where level matters less in the grand scheme of being able to hit a target.

Is BECMI the Best D&D Mechanically?

How did they quit? As far as I can tell, bounded mechanics are still alive and well in D&D Next. My 11th level fighter only has +9 to hit. On topic, I wish I could convince my group to play a game or two of BECMI D&D, just for the sake of trying it. I played it only with friends at school...

D&D 5E (2014) Signs & Portents (that we can read into) about the ETA of 5E

I'll say probably. I'll say it with a caveat; if that extra year is used for testing. In a perfect world, Wizards would release a huge beta-style playtest packet, include a series of adventures at different levels (particularly some mid-high level adventures) and then wait a few months and see...
