Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

What struck me about this quote is how WRONG it is :-). In both 3rd and 4th edition point buy is the norm and abilities range from about 5 or 6 or so at the low end to 20 at the high end (after Racial Adjustments). And thats just for starting characters. At higher levels stats in the mid to...

    Monte Cook - Pros

I really disliked this article. I disagree with pretty much all of his assumptions :-) In the survey at the end I answered 5 to all the questions. ALL aspects of the game should be decided by GM AND players (with, admittedly, the GM opinion often being more important than any individual...

    Pathfinder 1E What's so good/bad about Pathfinder?

I played D&D with the original white boxed set. I then played lots of AD&D. I then moved on to different systems. 3rd edition brought me (partially) back to D&D. I still play other games but since 3rd edition came out D&D has been on the list of games that I play. The basic thing that brought...

    The Problems With Modularity

You're not the only one :-) Its an incredibly ambitious goal. I work in software development and I can assure you that having intelligent, creative, well trained people (which the 5th edition design team is) is NOT even remotely a guarantee of success when you pursue ambitious goals. My...

What did Wizards learn from Essentials?

Self selecting internet polls need to be taken with EXTREME care. I've glanced at the WOTC forums and the impression I get is that the people who like 4th edition aren't reacting as favourably. But that vague impression is very much subject to the caveat above :-) People always react well to...

    D&D 5E (2014) DnD Next - There's a Module for That

I want all modules to be well play tested to make sure that, either individually or with ANY combination of other modules, they do NOT alter the power level of the game nor do they significantly modify how characters interact with the world. As an example of the latter, "Healing Modules" cannot...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Doesn't this require something like Healing Surges to be effective? If your "typical" party (ftr, mage. rogue, Non healbot cleric) has 1 CLW a day then the day is going to be VERY short. Surely, either SOMEBODY heals, EVERYBODY heals, or parties return home as soon as they get more than very...

    D&D 5E (2014) My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

I seem to recall that Gygax said that it was because of Bishop Odo, a man who went into the Battle of Hastings with a club because he was forbidden to shed blood. [//http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odo,_Earl_of_Kent

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e, some thoughts.

It depends :-). Some GMs won't allow one to reroll. Some groups will allow it but will very strongly discourage it. So, sometimes I'll probably go along but will like the game experience significantly less. If that is bad enough then eventually I'll either complain and either reroll or quit.

    Need more bad DMs?

DDXP is really a lot more about marketing than it was about playtest. It could only give the most basic possible feedback to WOTC (limited rules set, 1 particular scenario, 1st level pregens, very good GMs, players likely to be very forgiving). This is NOT a slam at WOTC. Getting people...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e, some thoughts.

Some peoples deal breakers may be so easy to work around that they are silly. But having deal breakers is certainly not silly. I currently play Pathfinder. I'm happy with Pathfinder. 5th edition has to be better than Pathfinder for me to want to switch. There are definitely some things...

I'm having a love affair with GUMSHOE

Uh, as somebody who has played many gumshoe games with Robin Laws (check the playtest credits if you don't believe me) I have to vehemently disagree with this assertion. Robin most definitely knows how to construct GUMSHOE scenarios. You don't like this game and that is fine. There are parts...

I'm having a love affair with GUMSHOE

Gumshoe works because it has totally different mechanics for investigative abilities and other abilities. If I were to run a Gumshoe like campaign in D&D I'd just drop some skills (search, sense motive, detective in some D20 variants) and replace them with another mechanic (simplest would be...

4E to Pathfinder - what is it like? What do you miss? Pleasant surprises?

Note : I haven't played all the paths. This is largely based on the research that I did a few months ago when starting up my current Crimson Throne campaign. The Adventure Paths are generally seen by most people as fair at the very least, generally good or better. Peoples opinions vary but...

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

In some discussions online somewhere I have very likely said that I do not like the prequels. I'm honestly not sure because, frankly, its not that big a deal to me I've certainly voiced a negative opinion on the prequels to people in person, I am fairly sure that I was always reasonably polite...

I'm sorry, your character is too good

I will absolutely try and balance the games that I run. Sometimes this will involve my asking a player to tone things down, sometimes it will involve my giving some free stuff to the other characters, sometimes it will involve my changing my tactics or the bad guys power level. It doesn't...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Countries - Comparisons?

That is EXACTLY what he is claiming to be doing.

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

Pathfinder combat is definitely faster than 4th edition. On the rough order of twice as fast or so. That said, it is still somewhat slow. I've been playing a fair bit of PFS recently. In a session that is usually about 3.5 hours of playing time we generally find it no problem at all to finish a...
