Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

Unfortunately, that also doesn't work for me. I don't want my fighter to be able to throw a fireball, even if he worships Saranrae (martial god with Fire domain in Golarion, the default Pathfinder world). And if Themes and Backgrounds go that far then D&D will really not be a class based system...

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

That was the point that I loathed. I want my cleric with a Fire motif to be able to throw fireballs. I want my vanilla cleric to be able to call down Flame Strikes or put up his Wall of Blades.

The Quality of Gaming Products Today

I'm surprised that nobody else has yet done this. Sturgeon's Law : "ninety percent of everything is crap". On a slightly more serious note there have been quality problems as far back as RPGs exist (most definitely including the original white box set). Some of them are pretty much unavoidable...

    OotS 850

The OOTS seem to be PERFECTLY placed to be hit by fireball spells and the like.

    Need DM advice

These seem underpowered if anything. Getting to use your claws as an armed attack isn't that huge a deal. I'd make the stats add up to +2 instead of +0. Sub races are cool. Especially if it is more than stats, it should also affect personality as well

When you first read up on a race...

Having a bonus in IQ and having wizard as a favoured class = suck? Having proficiency in some useful weapons = suck? While one could make an argument that humans are better wizards I really don't see how you can argue that dwarves or 1/2 elves are better. Unless you really, really, really...

What Bacris said. Plus : The character that one creates is totally compatible with regular Pathfinder play. It used less options but the options pretty much all work identically (there is probably one or two exceptions that I'm unaware of). One can take a Beginner Box character and play it in a...

    Blog: Paladin vs. Cleric, fight!

I want paladins akin to those from the Book of Righteous Might. These are all good aligned (NOT LG) Holy Warriors and are specific to every religion. With the default LG Paladin being one specific version of these Holy Warriors. Some get steeds. Some don't. Powers vary. Pathfinder Domains...

    Pathfinder 1E Why Pathfinder?

I never played 2nd edition so I can't answer directly. I will say what Pathfinder has for clerics. Each cleric picks 2 domains. Which domains you get to select is restricted by your God. The domains get interesting powers together with a domain spell. The powers, while not overpowering, go a...

    How odds make you feel

That was the theory but it never felt that way to me. Part of the problem was that WOTC really screwed up descriptions. I remember in the early days there was an example trap intended for high level characters. From the description and picture it was obvious to any player with the slightest...

    DnD Podcast April 13

I just downloaded the file and it played fine on my Windows machine. And I am most definitely NOT using iTunes on Windows (there we are in violent agreement :-))

    DnD Podcast April 13

Some of the comments on how they're interpreting that feedback made me nervous. On more than one occassion, they basically stated that they ignore what people say (what editions they prefer, the fact that they don't like something) because they know how to REALLY interpret the feedback. They...

    Pathfinder 1E Why Pathfinder?

First off, the people who call Pathfinder 3.75 are pretty much right. It has fairly minor changes from the core of 3.5 I think that one of the best things that they did was to remove most of the later 3.5 products and its proliferation of new and over powered base classes. If you like to use...

    PFS set up

I strongly agree with using First Steps. The 3 adventures introduce you to all the factions and give you a mix of adventure types. When are you planning on running the game? Hopefully NOT Tuesday or Thursdays. I like Steel Winds suggestion of Sunday afternoon if that is possible.

D&D 5E (2014) Jonathan Tweet & Rob Heinsoo: Making their own 5th Edition?

I like the pretty pictures and the tiny snippets of the world. I found that they alone inspired at least a couple of character concepts. I have a lot of respect for the authors. The game has an announced date. And a sufficiently well defined (and limited) scope that the goals seem achievable...

Realism vs. Believability and the Design of HPs, Powers and Other Things

Their current stated plan is to seriously scale back the power in other ways (greatly reduced or eliminated to hit bonuses, armour class bonuses, skill bonuses, etc). If they ALSO scale back hit points then advancing levels is going to gain one very little in terms of power. While I like some...

D&D 5E (2014) Jonathan Tweet & Rob Heinsoo: Making their own 5th Edition?

Agreed. Partly because of the designers involved. Partly because it sounds like they actually have a practical and useful focus. And partly because the world itself (together with the pictures) is sparking my interest. It just seems a lot richer and more achievable than DndNext. I'll...

Realism vs. Believability and the Design of HPs, Powers and Other Things

Or he recognizes the huge inconsistencies in the "definition" of hit points in every edition so far. Hit points ARE hugely unrealistic. They are also hugely useful from a gaming perspective. And we've all internalized them so much that they now seem almost realistic. But if you look at how they...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog: Beyond Class & Race

The problem is harder than that. In fairness to WOTC, expecting 1/2 a dozen developers to come up with better builds than thousands of rabid optimizers is pretty unreasonable. Even if we assume that coming up with the best optimized build is their goal (it explicitly was an anti goal in some...

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

I think that you're in a very small minority with that opinion. Almost all D&D players that I know of have a strong preference for one particular system. Ie, they have a system that is the "best" by a substantial margin. They all disagree about WHICH system is the best, of course :-). But...
