D&D 5E (2014) What big thing is supposed to be next week?

meh. So edition warring will have official sanction now. I wish them the best, but I think my tastes in gaming are far enough removed from the 3rd ed/4th ed hybrid that I'm sure will emerge I'm not exactly jumping up and down with excitement.

    Low-levelled newbie

One thing to note though is that in the older editions if a 1st level character joined a higher level party they leveled up damn fast. They'd also typically get kitted out with some pretty badass magic items just by pawing through the higher level characters 'castoffs' and be able to rely on...

    Going Retro

The way I always did it was: Roll your die. Add (or subtract modifiers). Subtract total from THAC0. That's the AC you hit. For example. Attacker has a THAC0 of 15 and a +1 for Str and a +1 sword. Player rolls a 12. Adds 2 for a total of 14. 15-14=1. Attacker hits AC 1.

D&D 4E Do you really want Greyhawk and Dragonlance for 4e

I agree with you wholeheartedly here. This is why I play Retroclones. I have a fair number of older D&D books and modules but I was born in 81, and didn't start playing till 92. I have spent years slowly collecting D&D books that are often older than I am. It's expensive, sometimes...

    D&D Rubbish? Hmmm...

AC is the "simplest" I suppose but back in the 80's Palladium had a pretty good setup too where you rolled against 2 different armour classes. A roll of 10+ meant you "hit" but if you didn't exceed the value of the armour you simply hit the armour and damaged it instead. If you exceeded the...

    2011 PC Bodycount Thread

Lets see... We're at a level now where access to raise dead spells is possible so permanent death is not longer a huge threat but my druid died after getting nailed by an ogre magi's ray of frost and because we were stuck in drearyland (the evil fay kingdom) we were unable to get him to a high...

This is one of the coolest OSR things I've seen in a long time.

Yeah, I like the fact that they actually phoned Gary to get the rules clarification too.

    Mallus Rediscovers AD&D

Yeah, Dragonsfoot's got a pretty good group of people in it. Knights and Knaves is a bit more fractious and limited in scope (I mean Dragonsfoot has a C&C forum!) but they aren't as scary as they are sometimes made out to be.

This is one of the coolest OSR things I've seen in a long time.

And amazingly enough I'm not talking about Dungeon Crawl Classics  I noticed a link to this blog posted on Knights and Knaves and holy crap what a find. To put it quickly it's a blow by blow account of an OD&D campaign running between 1975 and 1977. It's pretty crazy, you have adventures...

    Mallus Rediscovers AD&D

One of the things that I really like about the older editions of D&D is the cross compatibility and the ability for a DM to pick and choose rules from different systems that fit how he wants to run the game. It's a pretty tough system to "break" that's for sure. Just as an example, in the B/X...

    Mallus Rediscovers AD&D

"maaaarrrr! One of ussss!" *eats brainz* Soon you'll be arguing alignment on Dragonsfoot, getting into fights about AD&D's initiative system on Knights and Knaves, and setting Grognardia as your homepage. Down this path lies madness! Seriously though, I'm glad you had fun. Hopefully you...

Help for Dissertation - survey about video games

Really don't think I was the target market for that survey... Heck the game I've been playing most recently a pre-order beta release for an indy X-Com clone called Xenonauts. I guess that makes me an early adopter, but I'm not sure it counts since it's a clone of a game released in 1993...

    Medium Armor: Why?

Ultimately D&D's armour system is borked and has been since 1974... Mainly because they tried to combine (conservatively) 700 years of armour evolution (from 8th and 9th century mail) right through to 16th century articulated plate. It's a little tougher to nail down the evolution of lighter...

    Level one...hero or schlub?

Even in 1st edition or B/X D&D I'd certainly not call average 1st level characters "Schlubs". I mean think about it. A 1st level fighter has a good chance of surviving a sword blow or arrow shot. I mean he can potentially have as many or more hitpoints than a sword can hope to deal in damage...

WotC Announces New Chapter for D&D

Exactly. It's like a few years ago when Catalyst did an April fools joke for Shadowrun D20. Would it work? Yeah. Heck there still are people who think it would be a fantastic idea. It was funny though because there are so many people who play Shadowrun who are militantly anti D20.

Would you buy a product called 'D&D 4.5'?

At this point in time, no probably not. Basically I'd have to end up in a situation where my current gaming group stopped playing altogether. Then I'd have to get invited into a different group that was playing this hypothetical edition. I'd probably buy the PHB (or whatever it's equivelent...

Can Wizards turn around their D&D support?

This thread makes me sad. Not angry, not upset but a real punch in the gut feeling of sadness. I haven't played 4th ed in over a year, which is why most of this is news to me. Just wasn't the system for me. I'm in a B/X campaign now (with hexcrawling and everything) and having a blast, but...

Why is being "in print" important?

Neither of the games I'm playing right now are in print. I've got a B/X/1st ed hybrid game going, and a 2nd ed AD&D game with no Players Option. It's actually been an amazing relief to get off the splatbook treadmill, though it took me a while to become zen enough not to miss it. The old D&D...

How Often Do You Cancel Sessions?

My Sunday group is terrible for cancellations. We probably end up avaraging 1 session a month, though we've only played once since the beginning of December. It's pretty frustrating, especially since its often our DM canceling, often with little notice. My Wednesday group on the other hand...
