    Hackmaster RPG: Opinions?

I have run two mini-campaigns since it was released. It is my groups game of choice (Hackmaster 4E was our previous game of choice for what that's worth). It combines a nice old school feel, with brutal and gritty combat. Character's level somewhat slower, with levels basically being like...

How Do You Run a Doppleganger?

For me there are only 2 ways to do this. 1. Player cooperation: tell the PC what happened and tell them to keep playing their character with some minor differences (such as things the doppleganger wouldn't know about or do). Give them some guidelines and see how long it lasts. This is my...

So I Want To Run A Western Game...

I am biased but Aces and Eights is the best western style game out there. It is somewhat complicated but a few sessions in you will find that it gets much easier. Good luck, the Western Genre is often overlooked but it is a great genre and there are some good games for it out there. Let us...

    Suggest an RPG (not D&D)

    Hackmaster

Combat is different than HM4 and the new mechanic is a step in another direction. If you think AD&D and HM4 is the best thing ever made you may not like HM5, it will be hard to say. I think comparing the rules is even hard. I should point out I played in a massive 6 year HM4 game (needless to...

    Hackmaster

@treebore it is hard to describe combat in a way that won't make it sound complicated without just re-writing the rules here but combat is very fluid. Things like damaged shields and knockbacks are very intuitive and just a result of damage. basically there is a flow of an attack (attacker...

    Professional GM: Possible Return

I have been reading this thread, and the others, for some time without comment but something finally made me have to speak up. so you had a game, with four people, willing to pay you and you canceled? not only is that a poor business decision but also reflects poorly on your ability to...

    Hackmaster

your doing yourself a disservice in not playing this game. Not only does the opposed roll make combat more fun and exciting but the rules in general just make a lot of sense. Knockbacks, shields being destroyed by blows, getting your shield up in time to block an arrow, Threshold of pain, all...

WotC's official (and maybe unofficial) stand on fan-use

Email the artist directly and ask permission and what the terms of use are. most have guidelines, some general, some specific, and most are happy to allow you to use your art (for a non-profit site) if you follow them

What alternate game systems are you trying out if you don't like 4e?

We are switching to Hackmaster Basic the moment it comes out. My group played a lot of Hackmaster 4th edition and D20. When 4E came out we tried it for five-six months and decided it wasn't what we wanted. I should note we would have switched to Hackmaster Basic anyway as we are big fans of...

    4e Change of mind

I changed my mind actually. I was on the wagon, loved it, played it and the more I played the less I liked it. Now it is far down the list on games I want to play... but... I want it to do well, I hope it does and I hope those who enjoy the game keep playing and those who don't play other...

How much money do plan on purchasing 4E/GSL products this year?

$0 for me. My group currently plays 4E but most of us grew tired of the game after a few months. We will probably play it in some capacity since some members of my group like it. We will continue to run Hackmaster until the new edition comes out this summer then use that. Otherwise I will...

    Developer Talk = Gospel?

I think here is the issue at hand in a general sense Role-playing games strive to make a set of rules to make a fun game where you, as a player, can do cool/fun/awesome things like swing a sword, cast a spell, jump off a cliff, etc. However it is not real life and real life rules cannot apply...

    Monsters and Armour...

wouldn't it be easier to just add on the difference in the type of armor to the AC? so if the drow is using chain mail, and you want him to use plate, just subtract the chain mail value from plate mail and add in the difference? sort of simplistic but seems like it would work
