What fun thing have you done this year with D&D?

Oh man. Freshman year of college = best year of D&D yet. Ran a year-long campaign in 4E which looks poised to continue into the next three years (albeit with 5E)? Check. Played in my roommate's year-long 5E game (also looks like a long runner) as an Enchanter wizard with a greatsword? Check...

D&D 5E (2014) Street date for D&D Next Starter Game is July 15

That said, the Pathfinder Beginner Box from Paizo offers everything you're talking about plus character creation. Four pregens, an out-of-the-box adventure, rules for leveling up, and downloadable adventures/character content. True, the PBB costs about $35, but a lot of that is tied up in the...

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! YES! *Ahem.* Excellent!

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

A good suggestion, but the problem is that it ends up compromising the theme a bit. To take full advantage of the Dual Wielder feat, I'd have to have the Tribal Hunter use a non-light finesse weapon, and the only such is the rapier - hardly a Barbarian-worthy weapon! (This is an issue they...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Events at GenCon

Just had this conversation on Twitter. (Addendum: It is of course WotC's prerogative to make any such decisions about release date. That said, we do know that SOME form of "final" D&DN content will be out by GenCon - we just have no idea whether it's the starter set, Tyranny of Dragons, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

Why thank you! That was exactly the design goal with this one - a character that can do a little bit of everything. I'm turning in for tonight, but I'll post my tentative Barbarians for your perusal first. These are all pretty simple (as befits Barbarians) but I hope that they're mechanically...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

Hi folks, Still working on this, but I thought you might like to see the character I just completed. I haven't had time to write about the playtest rules, but eventually I'd like to sink my teeth into an analysis of the class features. A few notes about this character: The sheet format is...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Vault of the Dracolich: Tips?

That shouldn't be a problem. I plan to coordinate the event as described in the adventure; in fact, I think I'll enjoy the chance to sit back and watch things unfold. Hmm. We've been trying to keep our events to around three hours, so even 4 is on the high side; I don't think new players would...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Vault of the Dracolich: Tips?

Hi all, As you may have seen in my other thread, I'm a member of a campus gaming club and for our RPG finale event this year we're running the mega-adventure Vault of the Dracolich in a few weeks. We expect between 20 and 30 participants (so enough for 4 or 5 tables) and as the planning ramps...

I laughed at "Dwarf fighter blunts knives, bends forks, smashes bottles, burns corks, chips glasses and cracks plates."

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

Hi everybody! Did some work on the pregens in the tumultuous week-before-Finals, and I have some commentary on new areas! Armor Even though these characters were fourth level, I decided to start them all with the usual 175 GP. This resulted in some pretty uninspiring choices for armor - in...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

I'm sorry, the thread title is a bit of a misnomer. I'm not done with them yet; it may be a few weeks.

So you stow as part of the "cast a spell" action, then draw afterwards as part of your move.

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

Li Shenron, you make some good points. I suppose choosing complementary backgrounds to your class in order to gain your choice of skills is effectively the same as creating a custom background with the skills you want. Might be nice to see it made more explicit, though. I disagree that the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

Absolutely! Just give me a few weeks; right now I'm still entering things like "Armor Type Used" into a big spreadsheet. We plan to create nice-looking character sheets once we're done, though. I can't wait to see some of these character's get played, though. Some highlights: The...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

That makes sense, and it's how they did it in previous packets. It seems like that makes, say, the Guide ranger the better option - because then the character gets to pick any skill (admittedly, one can do this with custom backgrounds already).

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

AH HA! Thank you. This makes sense; I suppose describing it as a free action was overgeneralizing. However, can't our fighter still switch to the javelin as part of his or her attack action, then move into melee range while drawing a sword? Similarly, with the advent of split move, couldn't the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Learned From Creating 30 D&D Next Characters

My roommate and I are part of a gaming club in college (I will be president and he will be secretary next year). We've recently pioneered a series of introductory RPG events (basically several one-shots geared for new players), titled "Dungeoneering 101" and "Dungeoneering 102," which have been...
