    E-Tools, A Programmers Prospective

I haven't touched my graphics accelerator settings. I also doubt the hard drive is fragmented much. The main drive is relatively new and I recently built a clean install of XP on it.

Criminal Underclass in the Campaign World

Yeah, the Col only said "I'm not argueing with you about this" in response to Vax's argumentative and, in my opinion, blatantly combative tone. The Col didn't object to any other criticisms; he was quite open to them in fact. Vax was being rude. If he used the same tone in a face-to-face...

when I tested CC2, I wasn't loading a big map or anything. If I load a map with lots and lots of stuff in it load times will be a lot longer.

thanks for the tip, but it didn't help. I installed both those updates and eTools still takes about 25 seconds to load on my 450MHz, WinXP machine. I've also scoured my system for unwanted background processes and haven't found any. In fact there seems to be no relationship between eTools...

eTools startup time... I did exaggerate when I said 5+ minutes, so I just now decided to time it. On my PII 450MHz, this is what I get for average startup times: eTools: 25 seconds. MS Word: 5 seconds. MS Excel: 3 seconds. Campaign Cartographer 2: 2 seconds. PCGen: 26 seconds. So eTools...

FWIW: I prefer a minimalist approach. here is my contribution:

    I know but... e-tool = crap

I wasn't here when the question was asked but I would want to have a hand in designing the underlying data structures in which the stat's are stored; data structures which store the character's stats internally in a "histrorical" basis so one could easily remove levels or slap templates on and...

ha ha ha! a 21 inch monitor is no where near big enough for that monstrosity. It looks to me like you'd need at least 36 inches for that to be any use! :p

that is true. but they didn't come up with anything any better. It's amazing, but somehow they came up with a more "standard" windows look an feel (minus the skins) while simultaneously coming up with an interface that is less intuitive to use than the one that came with the PhB. The...

templates are not there. There are "work arounds" for this posted on the Etools message board, but the workarounds will not work well in general, especially for templates like ghosts, where you select a random number of the special abilities, when the template is assigned.

On the subject of PCGen: I've seen character sheets created by PCGen and they are impressive (vastly superior to those created by Etools if you use the xsl files provided by fluid in the Etools distribution). The problem with PCGen is that on my lower end machines it runs as slow as mollasses...

I completely disagree. I do agree that an object oriented approach is what should be used for such a project, but that is what C++ is. C# doesn't add anything new in that respect that a tool like this actually needs. On top of that C# is new, and has yet to prove itself in the market place...

    2 things about the site

I've heard it said that the reason we don't see those extra dimensions in regular experience is because the extra one are "rolled up" or "compacted" into some infinitesimal space. last I heard, the big problem for string theorists is that the equations which suppossedly described the behavior...

The foundations of non-euclidean geometry were developed by Riemann in the early to mid 19th century. 50 years before Lovecraft was born. Einstien's theory of relativity was first published in 1905, when lovecraft was 15. But in anycase, I agree that he probably didn't mean "non-euclidean"...

"there can never be an unconnected plane" of course there can! one may never get there, but that's another story..... are you telling me that if a tree falls in the woods, and no one is there to hear it, that it doesn't make a sound?!? :D but anyway, when I said "not necessarily in...

    New Special properties

hmmm. I'm not sure I quite understand. But let me go on a tangent and explain how I am approaching tackling my campaign's cosmology. I start by visualizing things geometrically. My very first conclusion from this is that either 1. all planes are finite, or 2. some are finite and some...

Regarding the number of dimensions in the universe: in physics canon there are only 4. 3 space. one time. String theorists talk of additional dimensions. But that's wild speculation at this point and there are just as many physicists who will tell you its hogwash as there are physicists...

finite and infinite, bounded and unbounded are standard mathematical terms that you will find in the opening chapters of any topology textbook or any differential geometry textbook. WoTC can't copyright those terms! and the manual of the planes doesn't use the terms bounded an unbounded...

    New Special properties

With reference to some of your other questions, what you define to be a "space" is what I would call: 1. a plane of existence that has a physical boundary. what you call a "dimension" is what I would call: 2. a plane of existence that is infinite in size and has no boundary. but there...
