TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

My DM just pointed out another example of 1e craziness: Switching between tabletop inches and diegetic feet without rhyme or reason

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

The number of rules and charts 1e has over 2e is objective. I haven't had a stop watch, but I think it's fairly objective to say that referencing these rules and looking up the charts slows the game down. My comment about thieves being garbage is subjective, sure, but it's objective that they...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

It's not just the rarity of such items. It's making everything align: PCs find the item No one else takes/uses it the item gives the stat increase to the right stat needed repeat the above a few times to get the stats up the requirements. How likely is that?

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Yep. See my comment above about why I never did a 2e clone. Because basically, that's what all the 1e clones are, just with 1e aesthetic. The thing that makes me wonder, and what prompted this entire thread, is my current DM of the 1e game I'm in is younger, and obviously wasn't playing back...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I'm sure there were a couple more I couldn't remember off the top of my head (I said as much), but to have it all work out? Finding them, having the right stats being increased, etc? Not probable.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Of all the AD&D PCs, how many went through In Search of the Unknown and happened to have that happen? IIRC, that's the only place that had magic fountains. Castle Amber had a meal that could do that (provided you didn't eat one of the other deadly items), and there might have been one or two...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

You won't get hate from me. After all, this is hanging on my wall ;) That being said, while I like Elmore and Easley, I much prefer the interior art of 1e to 2e. And frankly, the 2e black reprint interior art was hot garbage, IMO. In the order of my favorite art for the core books in...

We always interpreted the bard rules to mean you could overwrite that requirement, but in hindsight, we were probably doing it wrong and the bard section is a typo.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Funny enough, for years (right around when OSE took off), I've been toying in doing a grimdark 2e clone. 2e rules with 1e aesthetic. Then I keep realizing 2 things: 1. The clones out there that position themselves as 1e or b/x all have cleaned up rules that make them more "modern" anyway and...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

XP for gold is for sure a big one. But then again, 1e had training times and was super expensive*. You needed all that gold. 2e had training as optional, and even then, it wasn't nearly as costly. *First you had to be rated on a scale of 4 categories (E S F P--another non-intuitive scale) to...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

So I understand, a huge reason you played 1e was just to see if you could reach level 11 and be a bard? I think I'm misunderstanding, because most people I've seen, known, and heard about played 1e and moved to different campaigns, adventures and characters long before level 11 was reached. It...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I just think in practical purposes, they were awful mechanically. Not just because it's highly unlikely you were rolled at least three 15s, a 12, and an 10, but at bare minimum, you couldn't start being a bard until you were level 11. And most people didn't play to that level.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

OSE is the biggest retroclone. Right now, OSRIC is going gangbusters. But I bet if there was a Gold and Glory kickstarter, it would be an afterthought compared to OSE or OSRIC. Which kinda goes back to my original post. Why does 2e get overlooked compared to 1e when it's a much better* written...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

This I have to disagree on. The DMG is full of a whole bunch of this and that with not a whole lot of focus to it all. It's why it's near universal that 1e players ignored large parts of 1e.

The same with a release date of the new D&D game. Hence the tongue-in-cheek joke I was trying to make ;)

    New D&D Video Game Announced

Well, it was based on BG1 just 2 years earlier, so it kinda had to in order to be a seamless sequel. But my original comment was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, so I'm not going to argue the point ;)
