Rules heavy = bad; light = good

My previous post got a bit rambling and DnD focused, so here's a more general one. I like bounded accuracy. I have never seen it in play, but I believe it's a good thing. I like leveling. I don't want my skills/abilities/spells to increase, I want to be able to do new things firstly. Getting a...

Rules heavy = bad; light = good

I really prefer what is referred to as rules heavy games. Like DnD. Actually, I am almost exclusively a DnD player. I have played: Basic, AD&D 2nd ed, 3e, 3.5 and 4e. What makes it for me is the asymmetrical class design. 4e is kind of lacking in that respect with it's AEDU setup and the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering "Monsters": Magic Items

In D&D terms, that's more like a no-magic setting than a low-magic one. It's not like it's something that has a common definition, so they are probably going with what they think are right for D&D. Looking at the poll results, it seems they hit quite well, but it's not as if you are wrong if you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering "Monsters": Magic Items

4 permanent magic items at level 20, yeah, that's low magic to me. At level 5 you would might have one magic item. What's low magic to you?

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering "Monsters": Magic Items

Nothing like a game system which spells out the creators assumptions. Quite a bit better than the game systems that just assumes you are a mind reader... What I really like about the article is that they have dialed waaaay back on magic item assumptions for 5e. 3e and 4e was quite a bit over...

What can ruin a Game more; Poor GMing or a Bad Player

I don't enjoy playing with a bad DM, because he's the only DM. I can enjoy playing with a bad player, because there are usually several other players that I do enjoy playing with. Also, a good DM will often shift the focus away from the bad player and make the game enjoyable anyway. If I could...

Need hundreds of feathers to make arrows

Now, why would you need arrows against that small army? Can't the party just fly over to it and bombard it with Ewards Black tentacles, fireball, lightning bolt, flame strike, blade barrier and so on? Should wipe out any small army untrained townies can defend against.

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

As a DM, when the game focused on alignment, the players played their characters more one dimensional, so my answer would is: no. It's much better to have made some general thoughts on how your character would act and write those down, than to come up with an alignment. It makes the characters...

    D&D 5E (2014) [L&L] Campaigns in D&D Next

The interesting part here is that it talks so much about customization of the character, something that wasn't possible to do to a large degree in the 4e character builder. I do wonder if they are going to drop one for 5e, or if they are going to make a character builder with a lot more...

    Running a morally gray game

I am running a game where the characters aren't the "good guys". They aren't sociopaths either. I am running it in a medival setting where the nobles have all the power and rights, and the ordinary guy doesn't have much. This is important for such a game, a strong setting. The players need to...

Why simpler - much simpler - is better

Mostly that it was slightly amusing that for me, playing 4e was free because I borrowed the stuff I needed, while my other hobbies cost money, since I didn't borrow the things I needed. This being the exact opposite of the OP. Making another addition to your argument that pen-and-paper rpg's is...

Why simpler - much simpler - is better

Slightly amusing, but I played and DM-ed 3e/4e for a number of years and didn't own a single book. I borrowed them - which is free. :) I also go hiking from where I live, right into a nice hilly forrest. I often use the same shoes to work, which is a 15 minute walk. It's also a 20 minute walk...

How crazy are the item rules in 13th Age?!?

The magic item rules for 13th age sound a lot like I run magic items for 4e, but I am also running inherent bonuses. The PCs are going to get a few minor items (common), and one major item (rare/artifact). I think it's a good way to run the game and makes it much easier for the PCs to use more...

    Introductions

Welcome! I actually don't play regular rpg's on pc. I might play something simple on a smartphone/tablet (android) or action rpg's on pc (path of exile/titan quest/diablo 2). When it comes to genre, I prefer fantasy for my action rpg's and pen-and-paper games, but when it comes to PC games, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Next generation adventure design

After reading the http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?347752-Ghosts-of-Dragonspear-Castle-what-did-you-think thread I started thinking about how adventures are designed. I am primarily thinking of open-ended adventures where much is left to the players and their decisions. There were...

What are your D&D plans for 2014?

Going to continue my newly started 4e heroic campaign. Going to use Reavers of Harkenworld and Madness at Gardmoore Abbey. I really want to try 5e when it launches, so I hope someone else in my group wants to DM it. :)

PDFs vs. Books - What's your preference?

I prefer PDFs because of the shipping price is so high. Typically a pdf will cost 10$, the book 20$ and the shipping 20$, so it's 10$ for the pdf and 40$ for the book. I am going to get a tablet to read the PDFs on, reading them on a computer screen is less than ideal.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Balance is Bad

For me, balance isn't that important, but games with no balance isn't something I want to play. I was just about fine with 3e's wizard/cleric/druid, although they were a bit too powerful. Could easily have been fixed by boosting the fighter/rogue/ranger/monk a bit. Making the fighter a bit less...

Mayhem in the Shrine of the Kuo-Toa

I haven't run that module, but the way you went about it really reminds me of may last session that was packed full of role-playing combined with skill checks, and players coming up with fun ideas. I do run intimidate/diplomacy/bluff quite similar to how diplomacy is described in this article...
