Level Up (A5E) A5e in Modern Era

I'd probably look at reskinning stuff from both A5E and VRC. If I was looking for inspiration, I would look at the d20 modern books from the 3e era- they had quite a following and A5E definitely reminds me of 3e in some ways.

D&D General Homebrew or Premade Campaigns?

Yeah I think OP needs to refine their question a bit more if they want any level of understanding. I alter the crap out of a lot of premade adventures as well, but I took their question to mean "do you run without anything premade? or do you use premade adventures?" Cuz I think anyone running...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 4 Classes I Would Not Play 1-20 In 5.5

A5E berserker is so good it's really not in the same class as any other class, from what I can tell- but I've been disagreed with on that point (some say it's the fighter).

D&D General Homebrew or Premade Campaigns?

I do both... Not sure where to weigh in on the poll 😅 edit: If I average it, I think at this point premade adventures make up the majority my campaigns.. so I voted appropriately.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I wasn't trying to gotcha you, just replying to the other poster :) And like I said, create food n' water is heavily nerfed from the 5e version, which provides food and water for !fifteen! people. A5E creates enough for two or three, since its text suggests you're sacrificing one supply...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Goodberry's the obvious 5e spell that makes food unnecessary, while also providing on-demand healing.. as a 1st level spell! Available immediately! A5E makes goodberry provide healing, but it doesn't give days nourishment like the 5e version. A5E has create food and water but that's a 3rd level...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Oh hey, that's new to 5e24. Cool, they actually did something there! Going on 5e14, the relevant text is: Bag of Holding: Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action. Handy Haversack: Retrieving an item from the haversack requires you to use an action. When you reach into the haversack...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

So, funny thing, with 5e's wording the haversack is almost a worse bag of holding- you need to reference the haversack to realize that while retrieving something from BoH is an action, you can't just grab whatever you want out of it easily, because that's what the haversack does :'D

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

13th Age does this by starting out with the PCs as notable heroes, they're not recent farmers or wizards apprentices. It's not zero-to-hero, it's hero to greater hero. Not only that, but incremental leveling. Pretty much each session you pick something from the next level: a spell, a feat, hp...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Yeah, it's always something constantly considered by me, finding a balance between presenting interesting/worthwhile challenges, and expediency. We never tracked weight/encumbrance in 5e because it was a pain, but when most of my games moved online after COVID and the character sheets autocalc...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hero’s of the Borderlands unboxing, spoilers.

Could be some kind of basic milestone experience system. "Complete 1 section, level to 2. Complete 2 more sections, level to 3. Complete the rest..." Actually I guess that's more like a weird milestone leveling system, not XP. Unless you're doing XP like some other games where it's only a few...

Shadow of the Weird Wizard, check that out. Level Up is 5e with more 3e options, and Bo9S-Tomb of Battle martial maneuvers.

Why do you think this is the case? I don't disagree, mind, but would like to hear your reasoning.

D&D General Who else was resistant to Eberron for awhile before falling for it?

I fell for it immediately on release- it was my favorite setting after Planescape. I read some of the novels too, most were decent (except for one that I had to put down, the writing disagreed with me so much). If it came out now, I can't say I'd feel the same... but maybe that's because I've...

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I suspect those things are either there because of legacy (they're a part of DnD's identity, even if it's become vestigial like alignment)... OR it's there for an "easy win." My players LOVE yelling out "I have devils' sight/darkvision/light!" and not having to hold a torch.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yep, that's how it feels. I have found that increasing baddie damage by 35% and dropping their hp by the same amount helps a bit, at mearls' advice. It's a bandaid but it's also a bit of a pain to do on a VTT.

Appreciate your explanation- I've found this to be the case as well.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I might've said this elsewhere, but it can make sense if you're OK with the conceit that the PCs are special and unique, like Dungeon World states up-front. You're The Wizard. There are other mages out there, but no one's like you, and you're not like them. You're The Fighter. There are other...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I'm sure the game worked fine without, I was talking about personal tastes. I started with 2e, so it was always a part of the game to me.
