Why Doesn't Star Wars Hold More Mind Share in the RPG Market?

I was wondering about this the other day. I know that the RPG market has long been dominated by the Fantasy genre, but I can't help but wonder why Star Wars (being Science Fantasy) does not capture a larger part of the RPG market than it currently does. One could argue that, like Middle Earth...

    Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide Review

So instead of finding a way to make multiclassing work for you and your group you drop the entire system, a system you appear to think is superior to 5E in most other ways, in favor of a more limited overall system? That seems. . . drastic. That question isn’t an attack, I just couldn’t find a...

Pathfinder 2E Release Day Second Edition Amazon Sales Rank

Also, as has been said many times in this thread alone, just because Paizo isn't beating out 5E with P2 does not mean they are not doing well from a business perspective.

Besides D&D, what are you playing?

My P2 group is starting up again next week. We are really face-to-face people, so we didn't move things over to the digital space.

Pathfinder 2E Release Day Second Edition Amazon Sales Rank

I agree with this. I think 5E has had such a long time to capture the zeitgeist of modern TTRPG culture that it IS the culture for a large majority of people. I'm waiting for the beginner box to come out. I'm hoping to order that from my FLGS and then run demos, perhaps on a monthly basis to...

    Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide Review

My P2 group and I are finally going to be getting our game back together, so we all ordered these from our LFGS. Really looking forward to it!

Besides D&D, what are you playing?

My Star Wars game dissolved. One player got busy in his personal life and needed to bow out. Another two players are a little jaded when it comes to Star Wars right now and they asked to stop the campaign where we were at. Now I'm plotting Traveller shenanigans. It is my favorite SF RPG, and...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Hellboy, Dark Matter, Wondrous Expeditions, and more

Same! Although it works just fine using Traveller 2nd Edition.

Besides D&D, what are you playing?

Hackmaster 5E is probably my favorite fantasy RPG, but I will say that there is a lot more pressure on the GM to both keep the system running in terms of round calculations, and keeping up the tempo of combat. It is also hard to find in stores which might turn a lot of people off.

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire. Star Wars forever!

    Pathfinder 2E Martials > Casters

I think this is key. I haven't played my level 1 "master necromancer" with my group since before the pandemic, but I remember becoming acutely aware after just a few sessions how I felt like I was missing the presence of some 1-action spells. Hopefully some magic books will shed some light in...

    Gen Con 2020 Is Cancelled

I would not be going this year due to just purchasing a house, but I am glad that they are doing this to keep everyone safe.

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Oooh, OK. I was thinking of the mini-discs like the ones used in Nintendo's Gamecube etc. My bad!

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Off topic, but essentially all disc drives still have the smaller sized inset in the middle for the reading of mini-discs. :)

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

I think this is the crux of the issue. The word "buy" doesn't mean you OWN something. Someone can buy a year's pass to the tube in London or the metro in New York. That doesn't mean they own the subway system.

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

If your reply wasn't somehow related to DDB and their model then your response doesn't make much sense, eh? I suppose you can shift around all day. Tons of people can't accept that their position is incorrect or at the very least based on inaccurate information.

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Please. DDB isn't charging for books on top of a subscription fee which gives access to that content. The subscription fee gives you early access to tools and the ability to share your purchases with your group.

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

I can understand how that would be objectionable, and I don't disagree with you. The best you can do is go in understanding that DDB really IS a service, and archive that content the best you can in preparation for the inevitable suspension of that service. Really, you are just spreading...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Yes, unfortunately it does. I work in IT, for a small municipality, but the concepts are the same. You can't just continue to use old software infrastructure as it not only causes security issues, but compatibility issues as well. The amount of resources needed to keep something like the Insider...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Yes, especially in regards to distribution, which through the Dungeon Masters Guild would cause a portion of their profit to go to One Book Shelf. That being said, having worked in marketing (and the publication that went with that) most of that cost has already been incurred with the...
