    2nd world war

possibly - although I suspect that it will quickly degenerate into them setting up their patron for a fall. After all, if the dude needs HITLER'S skull for a ritual, he can't possibly be up to anything good... Well, there is that. I don't think it's in bad taste, nessecerily, but like I said...

    How smart are you(r papers)?

Exactly - and an M.F.A. (Master's of Fine Arts, which is what mine is), being a "terminal" degree, doesn't exactly map to your standard Master's degree, which is often a stepping stone to a PhD. MFA students are in the applied (read, actually creative) arts, and there are virtually no PhD...

Is D&D unforgiving of mistakes in combat?

hmmm... I have the exact opposite problem. My players are constantly taking prisoners. The Monk is especially good at it, of course. I suppose it's my fault - my insistance on having a plot to my games, means they are always trying to uncover the plot... "Why are these people stalking us?"...

Vampiric Cleric raises his Holy Symbol...and then...!

Assuming that you are one of the vampires that your master controls, you are not subject to the effects of your own rebuke. If you are not controlled by a master, then you are your own master, in which case you still are not subject to the rebuke. Therefore, the answer is quite clearly no. jtb

What would you have done differently?

Personally, I would have made mine more steampunkish - lots more constructs and other weird pseudo-mystical-mechanical stuff running around. Maybe if they ever leave the damn elvin city and head for the gnomish city... More NPCs with names. More cities to explore. And no Unicorns. I would...

    Turning Undead as damage variant?

Ugh - what a nightmare of paperwork that would be. I like the flavor of the idea a lot, but in practice that would be really hard. Another idea I have heard which I rather like is the dazzle/stun effect... jtb

    Stop the 1st level Rogue

I think one major balancing factor is that rogues don't get the +1 BAB at first level, which will limit their feat choice. They will not be able to pick up power attack until 2nd level at the earliest.

    time travel

Many of the native american cultures had quite extensive trade with other tribes, even in other regions. Supply and demand existed then just as it does now. The main difference is a lack of standardized, government-controlled currency. So, anything that was scarce in one area and abundant in...

How do you introduce third party sourcebooks into a campaign?

With the group I DM, I'm the only real materials junkie, so usually I bring the options to the table. At the moment, it's pretty core, with some stuff from EN publishing, Ronin Arts, and a couple other thrown in. Also some stuff from the splatbooks and Complete Warrior. And whatever I can...

    Help me remember a legend...

And it wasn't dragon blood - though accounts differ. I have heard versions of the legend where his mother held him by the heel and dipped him in the water of the river Styx, and also that she held him over a sacred fire of some sort (memory fuzzy).

Explain to me this probability puzzle

OK - I concede the point, based on both all the excellent explanations, and also some empirical results. I modified my script to play the game automatically. Instead of asking you to choose a door, and then to switch or stay, it now asks you to choose a strategy - switch or hold - and a...

Explain to me this probability puzzle

See, right there is the flaw in your reasoning. There aren't three eggs to choose from. You didn't get what I'm trying to say a bit later - that there are only two real choices now. well, there are two viable eggs, one of which is a winner. That's 1/2 Wrong. There aren't three choices...

Explain to me this probability puzzle

yes - within one win of 50%, using your switch strategy, then the same with a hold-em strategy. Although I only played about 20 tries on each, so I suspect that it wouldn't be exactly statistically valid. right. Ahh... I see. The odds change when you smash the empty egg, because you are...

Explain to me this probability puzzle

No, I'm not - what he says, in effect, is "Here's two doors. One of them has a goat. One of them has a car. Pick one." No matter what happens, the outcome of the first round is identical. One wrong door is eliminated, and you are presented with two doors. One wins, one loses (unless you...

Explain to me this probability puzzle

I think you are all making it too complicated. If we are assuming that: Monty will always remove one of the doors, and that he will never eliminate the door with the car, and that he will always give you a second guess, Then there is actually only one round here. What happens with the...

    Skills beyond 5 ranks

I like the idea in principal, but feel it's important to note that skill points and checks scale up much more rapidly than save bonuses. Subbing a skill check for a save, particularly as a bonus for having a really high skill is basically gar-ron-teeing that they will make it. Unless the DC is...

    Turn Undead - alternate results?

So, I ran a game this weekend where the party was clearing out an undead-filled dungeon. And it was pretty much a cakewalk, because the cleric almost never fails to turn the undead. Now, I am not terribly concerned with the actual number-crunching involved - I have many ideas on balancing...
