"sleeper" spells you didn't realize were so good

I have to second the entangle vote. We have been using that to great effect a lot lately, and it has saved our bacon by breaking up enemy charges. Although it is getting less effective as enemy save bonuses go up. *sigh* just have to come up with something better... jtb

    Grief over a review

errr, umm... I meant ask, did you playtest the product you reviewed, to which you already answered 'yes'... yeah. which puts you in more of a difficult position. Personally, I would prefer to hire a writer who is capable of standing behind his own decisions and opinions, and also who has a...

    Grief over a review

It's a quandry. First, a few questions. 1 - did you playtest the product that you playtested? 2 - were you paid for playtesting any of their products, whether you reviewed it or not? (and by paid, I mean any form of compensation beyond the free playtest copy and your name in the credits) 3 -...

Does your Dwarven warrior wield an axe?

I play in a dwarf campaign, and all of them use axes. It's a cultural thing.

    Population density in your setting?

My population density is whatever I happen to need at the time. There are some big cities, some wastelands, some sparsely populated farmlands. Whatever the plot needs. If I need there to be an undiscovered cave, then, by golly, no one happens to live there. Or maybe the local shepard tells a...

    Training, gaming, and reality

Keep in mind the fact that in our, realish-world culture, things like computers and suspension bridges have greatly enriched our ability to do things. Yet only a select few have the knowledge and skill to harness the power that lies within technology and make it dance at their whim. Anybody...

I want to hear your Time Travel adventure stories

I ran a series of adventures not too long ago with a time travel twist. (bear with me, this is a long plot line) The PCs' recurring villian kidnapped the younger sister of an NPC ally, and then sent them on a scavenger hunt as a ransom. In the process of the scavenger hunt, the PCs did some...

What mechanic do you use to determine ability scores?

My DM recently had us do a roll 4d6 x7, reroll 1s, and drop the lowest die in each roll and the lowest roll. Apparently I was really on with the dice that night, because I wound up with a 72-point equivilant character (based on DMG point buy). Even for such a generous generation method...

    Holy Water

Perhaps there's a difference between holy water and HOLY water. which is to say, that the ceremonial stuff is just ritually blessed, but the stuff sold to combat the undead actually has the spell cast on it... jtb

    Designing NPCs on the fly

Well, for starters, remember that you don't need a fully fleshed-out character in a situation like this. Who cares what Boris the Bad's skill check for Craft: Fuzzy Bunny Slippers is? All you need to know is his save and grapple bonuses, and whether he is willing to fight dirty (i.e., his...

    Reoccuring BBEGs

I had one return for a while, but he got a little stale and eventually was surpassed by the PC's in power level. Though it might have been fun to milk his presence for a while longer, I got a lot of good use out of him and ended his harassment to the PCs in a memorable way, so I was content to...

How do you treat Outer Space in your fantasy setting?

There is no outer space. Crescent exists at a confluence of the elemental planes, bound together by the will of the gods, held in check by mortals through a special ceremony every 500 years. So, up high in the sky, there is... more sky. And after that, there is more sky. And then even more...

    Is your fantasy world hollow?

My world isn't exactly hollow. It exists at a confluence of the elemental planes, which are bound together and merged through the will of the gods, renewed by a ceremony every 500 years. (Guess what's coming up soon...) So, the lone continent is merely an outcropping of the Solid into the...
