D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Classic Settings Are Not 'One Shots'

I am, I'll probably use it for whatever 5e game I run next (Or quite possibly for anything adjacent enough, I've got a group interested in Quest, and I feel like the setting might work pretty well for them).

D&D 5E (2014) The skill system is one dimensional.

My personal experience hasn't quite borne this out. Now, granted, I specifically call out in my description spoken to the whole party that the high Perception player specifically notices something, but as a result, that character constantly gets credit from the other members, and he personally...

D&D General "Forever DM" - choice or lack of alternatives?

My ratio of games played in to games run is about 1-3, but of the games I run, I know no one else would want to take up the mantle, so the moniker feels reasonably appropriate. Which is fine, because I feel so much more confident, and have more fun, being on the small side of the table.

D&D General What "Rating" Do You Prefer Your D&D

In the games I want to either run or play, violence is the only usual qualifier, and while combat is certainly a very regular feature, it is not narrated or detailed in a way that I think pushes it anywhere beyond PG13 at most, considering that covers Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings...

    Unpopular opinions go here

Avatar: The Lion Turtle and what he gives Aang completely neuters the actually interesting conflict that has been brewing the entire series, and robs the ending of that show of most of its potential emotional impact.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 6: Paladin ... Divine Smite is a Spell now

Wrathful is frightened for up to a minute, requiring an action after a failed save to shake it off (or for the caster to drop concentration).

    D&D 5E (2014) Constructive Criticism

The simplest, most broadly applicable answer is: Don't inform them what you're think they're doing wrong, tell them the areas where you are struggling, or not having fun. Especially given that people are generally good at knowing what they don't like, but not necessarily what will fix that...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

I do feel like I understand the process of BW fairly (at least as is relevant to your example) at this point thanks to your posts, and I appreciate that. I haven't been questioning your play, or the system, in this thread. I was merely trying to answer your question of what I meant by 'scope'...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

By scope [to which the world exists], I mean how much of/to what degree the world these characters inhabit has facts about it that are known to one or more of the players, and, in the specific context of what Micah was asking, holding those in contrast to things that are decided in/during/as a...

Sheer existence, maybe, but scope thereof is a fair question, and I think the heart of their statement.

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

I read "outside of the PCs" as intrinsically placing the frame of reference in their world and not ours. To them, it does (can?) exist, in the normal meaning of the word.

Frustratingly, having the power of B) as a player can rob me of some ability to feel A).

How did you convince your group to try something different?

Fortunately, I generally just have to ask my friends if anyone is interested in the core concept. Hopefully I can get at least three people, but if there's only one or two, I can usually find folks amenable to being convinced. If no one is on board, I'll just pocket it to try again later...

    D&D 5E (2024) Survey Launch | Player's Handbook Playtest 5 | Unearthed Arcana | D&D

Aren't to-hit rolls equally trivial, though? All I will say is that I've never seen I can't recall a martial turn taking more time to resolve than a caster turn. Could very well be a function of who I play with, but nonetheless. Last time I saw a fireball, it hit twelve enemies, with two...

    D&D 5E (2024) Survey Launch | Player's Handbook Playtest 5 | Unearthed Arcana | D&D

Almost certainly. Multiple attacks use the most standard rolls, typically only affect one enemy, and can just outright fail on the to hit roll. Fireball is almost always used on groups, requires dex saves for each creature affected, and never fails to inflict at least some damage. There's just...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

I agree with this perspective a lot, but I'd personally go one step farther, and split the distinctions into three: Linear adventure: A pre-set goal/direction, with flexibility in how you approach it (with admittedly varying degrees of flexibility depending on the GM/adventure). LMoP feels like...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

That's definitely what I was imagining, so I'm glad to know I wasn't off base. So, it makes sense that that character shouldn't be asked to specifically be ready to go to the Isle of Dread.

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

To be fair, I did call out that it might be overly semantic. :p I was aiming to somewhat capture the divide Gradine mentioned between desire for Expression and Discovery/Exploration. You're certainly not obliged to! Tried to caveat that heavily. Obviously you're right, different people will...
