D&D 3.x [3rd/3.5] DMing Tips -- Friendly DMs assistance please?

Avoid problems with only a single solution Do you remember those old video games where you'd point & click your way through it? Games like Myst? I believe they call it "pixel bitching" when you have to find juuuust the right pixel to click on. I remember doing it in the Baldur's Gate games...

    Dragons CR.

Ahnehnois, would you cite your source? I would be very surprised to hear that the authors deliberately broke the CR scores in order to trick DMs & players into overly-difficult encounters. I would like to read about that from those that said it. For my part, I suspect the authors just didn't...

    Arresting the PCs

Um, yeah, why wouldn't they? That was kinda my point: these are cheap, fair, easy things that won't be upsetting for the DM if the tables are turned. Your warning note regarding my posts is... fine by me. Let the players ask for slow acting poisons. We are talking about something cheap with...

    Arresting the PCs

OK, let me rephrase then. I don't get the sense that this DM will doggedly insist on a suboptimal scenario that gives away the ruse when the DM in question is asking for improvements. And that is what I'm advocating. Especially considering that the described failing scenario is a mere 1...

    Arresting the PCs

This seems like a weird question to me. This would only happen if you make an issue of it. Part of being a DM is social engineering. Your NPCs cannot make diplomacy rolls to "force" players to like them -- you have to play your NPC as genuinely enjoyable to be around, if you wish the players...

Pre-gen PCs for DunDraCon, suggested prestige class?

Thanks! I guess I should explain why I didn't initially try for a cleric or druid. The wizard has the Arcane Disciple feat, and so is equipped with a wand of Cure Light Wounds. The paladin and bard also have such wands. Thus, the need for a healer is minimal. The person playing the cleric...

Pre-gen PCs for DunDraCon, suggested prestige class?

I'm running a 2nd level 3.5 edition game, and a 6th level 3.5 edition game. I have made 7 pre-generated characters for the game (rogue, fighter, bard, duskblade, warlock, wizard, paladin), and I need to think of one more class that someone would like to play. I'm having a difficult time. I...

    D&D 3.x How to play a 3.5 group without a healer?

You could try this feat, from Complete Divine: The trick is to select a god with the Healing domain. This only gives you the ability to cast one Cure Light Wounds spell each day, but it also puts the spell on your spell list... so your wizard or sorcerer can get a wand of CLW and cast away. :)

    Cleric of Fharlanghn

So instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt, you went after him under the assumption that he meant the least sensible option? Even though there was another blatantly obvious and far more logical line that he quoted?

    Cleric of Fharlanghn

Uh, actually, it seems pretty clear to me that Nail was referring to the comment about taking a few levels of fighter. You might want to go back and look at how the conversation threaded.

    D&D 3.x Revised 3.5 edition XP calculator

My friend has put together a revision of the D&D XP calculator, here: EL & XP Calculator 4.04 This is like the other XP calculators out there, with one new enhancement. We have tried to address the point buy debate. That is, this calculator allows you to enter in what you think the party's...

    Gaining Domain Powers

Bonus Domain in Complete Divine does this, but it requires you to be really high level. Arcane Disciple in the same book is much lower level, but all it does is give you access to the spells, not the powers.

D&D 3.x [3.5] rogue: need to get my crits up, can't afford keen

I would also be interested in magic items that enable the character to render an enemy flat-footed or deny them their dexterity bonus. But the items I've found seem to all hover around 8000 gp. Anyone know of cheap stuff that can do that? Will that last the duration of the spell (50 minutes)...

D&D 3.x [3.5] rogue: need to get my crits up, can't afford keen

Improved Critical requires a BAB of 8, unless I'm mistaken. How are you getting it? EDIT: nevermind, I can see you editing your post right now. :)

D&D 3.x [3.5] rogue: need to get my crits up, can't afford keen

I have a 6th level rogue. I have 13,000 gp to spend, but can only spend max of half on any single item. I have built the rogue around sneak attacks & crits, taking improved feint & telling blow in order to increase my damage dice as often as possible. Problem: I can't apply the keen property...

    The Best level dip

This. If you dip into 1 level of wizard with the Abrupt Jaunt alternative class build, and if your DM hasn't nerfed it, you can use an immediate action to teleport 10' multiple times a day. Jaunt away right as the bad guy swings, foiling his attack and delivering yourself to a superior...

    Are you Kidding me!!!

I don't know if they look different inside, but IIRC the text has all the errata incorporated (or what existed at the time of printing). Don't hold me to that, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. I recall some players saying things like, "What, now I have to rebuy the books just to get the...

    D&D 3.x What do you ban? (3.5)

If changing the price of the healing belt turns my game from "correct level of healing" to "broken level of healing" then I'd say two things. First, then D&D is very fragile if one such change ruins it. Second, I'm OK to play the game broken, then.

    D&D 3.x What do you ban? (3.5)

Well, the belt will keep going after the wand runs out of charges. In a game I'm playing in right now, we can burn through a wand of CLW in just 2 or 3 encounters. So seeing the belt continue to work long after the wand is gone is certainly part of it. Having said that, when I DM, here's my...

    Vegepygmy alternatives?

So, I had created a nice little modification to a module that entailed adding a russet mold to an area, and then a little past it, some vegepygmies that the russet mold had created. I loved the vegepygmies for 2 reasons: they are low-CR so I can have quite a few of them against 6 2nd-level PCs...
