    SkyNet really is ... here?

Tristan Harris: former design ethicist for Google, for those like me who didn't know. I think AI's reins are just fine. Bing's image generator almost lost its knickers when I tried to generate a knight standing over a fallen foe. Even one who was just "sleeping."

Worlds of Design: Who Gets the Crown?

Gonzo magic, I think you mean. A DM controls the magic power of every-single-character besides the PCs. So resurrection, for example, need not happen until the PCs collect an expensive diamond. Which is currently very hard, because a thief has been stealing all the diamonds in the city . . .

What are your thoughts on roll-under/roll-high mechanics?

Sure, but OP said, "and there is no pesky math, for those who don't like adding modifiers." And hitting your exact ability score doesn't seem quite so cool when another character can beat you by one point without even getting close to his.

Worlds of Design: Who Gets the Crown?

This article makes me want to watch House of the Dragon again. Is there a good RPG sourcebook for succession-quests? A Game of Thrones RPG?

What are your thoughts on roll-under/roll-high mechanics?

Nothing wrong with this, but it doesn't follow K.I.S.S. If there are no modifiers, how do you roll for tasks with higher difficulty? If you roll opposed, does the player who rolled her exact score beat the one who rolled higher, but didn't max the roll? Is there still a target number, so the...

    Musings on Sci Fi Campaigns/Adventures

Just do what Starfield did: make most planets boring. Then the PCs will want to go to the interesting locations you've set up. Or you might have the PCs' terrestrial scanner report a very common finding: Hostile Environment. Do Not Enter.

    What is adventuring?

Adventuring is what happens when four unemployed people leave home during the middle ages.

There's A New Edition Of The Cypher System Coming

I passed over the "D&D at Gen Con" thread to get here. This "wounds" news is interesting, because I thought the ability damage feature was cool and unique.

GenCon 2025 TTRPG announcement speculation thread!

D&D is retiring the DMG, because their new AI app renders DMs obsolete? Ironically, I'd love to hear about a companion app that allows one to role-play Light No Fire parallel to the CRPG. Ooh, ooh! Stephen Colbert's new gig is in the role-playing world.

    White Dwarf Reflections #24

I think I've discovered D&D's motive to decouple character level from AC, STR, and even HP: it allows characters like this to be super powerful, even if they don't look it. "So what if she's mostly naked? She kicks butt!"

SHIFT Roleplaying System from Hit Point Press

Does NOT DnD publish transcripts? I'd like to read all about it.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

I mean, when four dudes and dudettes enter the room brandishing sharpened steel . . . they don't look like they want to talk.

Primitive War | Official Theatrical Trailer

Definitely not a $15-per-person movie. Blasphemy. Aliens is a classic.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Sounds pretty OSR to me. Is there a reason you couldn't start over with the same characters to save time? Play a zombie version of your dead character?

    Game Mechanics & Lore

Matter of opinion, I guess. D&D has a decent amount of lore that ties to some mechanisms. High character level is a powerful entity. Spellcasting ties pretty well to the fictional wizards (and was even named after some). But for all the flashy, high-fantasy action that the lore implies, the...

When "playing it wrong" is more fun

Then the issue doesn't come up because it begins with a game that one doesn't enjoy. Can playing it wrong be more fun? Oh yeah. I'd even recommend it, as long as the whole group is on board. Erm, D&D is more fun when not played by its intended rules and playloops. I don't think it has a...

Spells that hit two opponents and door/wall position

Well, I don't like checkers-like combat. Combatants should be free to move where and when they want. So yes, the wizard might catch a glimpse of both creatures at the same time. Are they both going to stand around like archery butts while spells resolve? Probably not. Allowing it was the...

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

Ouch. How about, "and even an LOTR-inspired TV series?" What drives people to Draconian RPGs now? Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, and World of Warcraft. Video games.

D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: game day setup

A for effort, but I'll take the card table over this. By the way, that ship becomes easier for you to reach if the DM side is on the corner of the table instead of the end.

    Worlds of Design: Combat Methods

Modos RPG agrees with this but: Defender must choose to parry - otherwise damage is 1 minimum. GM or PC can halfmax, which simplifies the rolling part for, well, half the die's maximum. Still simple, still no table lookups.
