    Let's Talk About Solo TTRPGs

Err, no. Games Workshop was founded in 1975, and TSR UK in 1980. While Warlock of Firetop Mountain certainly brought many people into the hobby, I'd demur from the idea it was "central" for very long.

    Let's Talk About Solo TTRPGs

Occasionally. Back in the first summer vacation after I learned to play, I played a few days of AD&D1e generated from the tables in the back of the DMG. But recruiting some people and teaching them was more fun. This weekend, I'm playtesting a kickstarted solo quest. But in between, nothing...

Worlds of Design: The Improv Imbalance

We don't make a fuss about the players' need to improvise their characters' reactions and dialog, because that's fairly easy, given that they have only one character to run, and plenty of time to think. I'm a fairly improvisational GM, having learned what I can do easily, and what I need to...

ICv2 Reports Disappointing Year For Hobby Games Channel: TTRPGs Down, D&D Declines 30%

I don't have an LGS any more. I had one for a fair while. They didn't carry any of the stuff I wanted to buy. Well, most of it was pretty niche, so I tried to get them to order it for me: they'd get paid for that before they had to settle their bill with the distributor, so they'd be ahead. They...

Hypothetical Fun: What If A Different Genre Was The RPG Foundation?

That seems the most likely origin point to me. The setting is easy to understand, the characters can move around it fairly easily, and law enforcement is patchy. However, there's a strong desire for justice, and a willingness to use violence.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

"But it's AI generated! That makes it both brilliant and dangerous, or so the TV tells us! It's dangerous so we're cool! We're so clever, we're pioneering a new way of creating content and making money from it before that stops working!"

Evil Monster Ancestries - Yay or Nay?

For me, it depends on the setting and its societies. In the homebrew fantasy world I've run for decades, mundane creatures that usually have "evil cultures" such as orcs and goblins can be accepted in society if they are polite and well-behaved. They are regarded with suspicion, and have to...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

The party are spearheading a small force to clear the guard point at a border, so that a larger force can pass through to attack a regional capital. The guard point has a fairly strong tower on each side of the road, and barracks, mess-halls and stores further back. This is in Greensward, where...

GMs - what is your vetting process for finding new players?

I've been organising the same home group since early 1998, and hosting it until it moved online during the pandemic. I was in my late thirties when it started and I'm now in my early sixties. Two other people have lasted the entire course; various others have come and gone. Having seen the...

What is the GM's Most Important Job?

There was a convention game where I didn't realise how determined two of the players were to act up until we were well into it. Indicating through events that if they wanted to get their characters killed, I wasn't going to stop them calmed them down.
