[+]Training and Reward, not Assumed Advancement

The d20 change is just a question of rounding to 5% intervals, and then simplifying the physical act of rolling. It doesn't change any probabilities to roll with a d20 as opposed to d100 against numbers at 5% intervals. Pendragon did this well before D&D 3e made all of its rolls d20-based.

[+]Training and Reward, not Assumed Advancement

It is perfectly possible in point-buy systems for the GM to award some points with a requirement that they be spent on a specific form of advancement. It's also possible to for the GM to require characters to buy up things they've actually used, and forbid buying up things they have not touched...

    Single System Monogamy

I have never been monogamous with a game system. I learned gaming in two separate groups simultaneously, one played AD&D1e and the other, which was larger and had more interesting referees, played OD&D. It was obvious that neither system could handle everything I might wish to do with a TTRPG...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

It does with a little practice. For example, fighting that Iron Golem above, I found out in the first turn that it had DR in the 15-20 range, which meant I wasn't getting much damage through with ordinary hits. A quick PDF search revealed that attacking chinks in armour is at -8 to the torso...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

We're in part 4 of Kingmaker, in the Tomb of Armag. We're looking for the present-day barbarian leader of the same name who thinks he's a reincarnation of the historical one, or something like that. The evil priestesses were a bit of a pain, via demon summoning and various blast spells, until...

Best "rats in the tavern cellar" map?

The ancient Judges Guild scenario The Dark Tower has a large dungeon, which includes an entrance from a tavern (there are several other entrances) and a rat warren, but from memory, the tavern does not lead to the warren.

How Quickly Do You Bounce Off a System?

I can bounce very fast if a game has an objective that I'm not sympathetic with. Examples: Fantasy Hero went on about how to design characters for the media you wanted to emulate. I don't: RPGs are their own genre, and trying to emulate a different one just makes things harder. D&D 4e was too...

Best "rats in the tavern cellar" map?

I suspect so: your post is only the second time I recall encountering it. The first was the introductory adventure in the SJ Games Dungeon Fantasy RPG, where the opposition rapidly gets beyond large rats.

Some mechanisms (often ported from the old days) are putting the incentives in the wrong place - blog post discussion

All of those things were happening years before Hickman. The game didn't tell you could do those things, but that didn't slow people down much.
