D&D 5E (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

WotC doesn't do "new editions" without changing the XP table and the saving throw mechanics.

D&D 3.x Are there any role-play differences between Paladin and Cleric?

@Man in the Funny Hat Yep, that's how I've always interpreted the distinction too. Clerics get their powers from deities and are all about religion; paladins get their powers from the impersonal force of Lawful Goodness that even LG gods are beholden to and don't so much serve LG gods as ally...

    On "Illusionism" (+)

Oh… I don't think I can agree with that at all. Let's be clear here: illusionism is fundamentally a force play — it's forcing a GM-desired outcome in spite of a mechanism for choosing between multiple possible outcomes (be that mechanism a player decision, a random generator, a subsystem of...

    On "Illusionism" (+)

Interested to see where this discussion goes. For my part, I try very hard to avoid illusionism at all costs, chiefly for ideological/play-style reasons. It's more habit than necessity these days, but in the past, I found myself needing to resort to transparency techniques to avoid both the...

Challenge: Shows that Deserved More than Four Seasons

Babylon 5, Enterprise, and Farscape all deserved the fifth season they didn't get. Stargate SG-1 deserved at least five, and maybe even as many as seven, of its ten seasons. (Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, definitely jumped the shark far sooner.)

D&D General 6 Ability Scores but 4 Classic Classes?

My brain immediately goes to Final Fantasy for this question. It is my core reference point for what a class system ought to look like. And if we map FF1's original six classes onto the D&D ability scores, it looks like this: Strength — Fighter Dexterity — Thief Constitution — Black Belt...

Only if the Classic rules come with it. ;)

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

It'd be a waste of a waltz then. The "game part of an RPG" isn't a thing without whatever is facilitating tactical infinity (GM judgement, distributed authority, player consensus, whatever). Remove that from the equation and you don't have an RPG at all.

D&D General Dice Fudging and Twist Endings

Because tactical board games do not admit tactical infinity. There is little room for lateral thinking in HeroQuest or Gloomhaven.

Alternity: The TSR/WotC game that time forgot!

I loved Alternity back in the day, and I still have my old books. It's not my go-to space opera game anymore (that would be White•Star), but I definitely use Alternity (especially Star*Drive), d20 Future, and Star Frontiers as system-agnostic supplements when I have occasion to run White•Star.

What's the WORST Star Wars movie?

Oh, that's easy — it's The Force Awakens, because The Force Awakens was trying so very hard to be A New Hope without actually being A New Hope. It was also the bellwether for the direction of the third trilogy, which means that all responsibility for everything wrong with The Last Jedi and Rise...
