You could try Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon. Moon was in the US armed forces and it shows in the battle scenes. Or Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson. I just finished reading Prophecy by Elizabeth Haydon. That is a fantastic series. Currently I'm reading two books at once...
