D&D 5E (2014) Perception in 5e, discuss how it works

I am not willing to make a determination on if this is good or bad, I think time will tell and even then it will likely differ table to table. I think just from a complexity perspective, people will not naturally play it rules as written. They will have to wrap their heads around it to get...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception in 5e, discuss how it works

I was reading through the vision and light section and it says lightly obscured gives you disadvantage on Perception (WIS) checks. It also says elsewhere this equates to -5 Passive Perception. So Bob the fighter with 12 WIS has a passive perception of 6 while in rain or fog or dim light...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception in 5e, discuss how it works

I think this is a very workable solution. If you allow me to plus you on this. So perception skill gives you a basal ability to notice things and then Survival, Insight and Investigation are used to determine the details. I can see perception always being passive in this type of rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hidden Player rolls?

You could give them a passive stealth check and then roll perception against it. I think this is a good solution if your players use player knowledge for their PCs.

D&D 5E (2014) Perception in 5e, discuss how it works

So we have several skills that allow characters to notice things and we have several mechanics applied in different ways on how to determine if they sneak, pass the lie, or leave tracks that are not discoverable. The skills and what they can identify: Perception detect the presence of something...

D&D 5E (2014) Guiding Bolt too good for a level 1 cleric spell?

    Thank you, you are correct.

D&D 5E (2014) Guiding Bolt too good for a level 1 cleric spell?

Thunderwave is save negate not 1/2. the other thing about burning hands and thunderwave is the closeness that is required for them. If your wizard is up in the fight they are handy but every wizard I play is valiantly attempting to stay out of melee range and I am usually pretty successful at...

D&D 5E (2014) Legends and Lore July 28: Keeping it Classy

For sneak attack you can access the bonus damage in two ways: Finesse or ranged weapon and advantage or any type of weapon and "flanking". Of course it could also mean: Access bonus damage with a finesse or ranged weapon if you have advantage or are "flanking".

D&D 5E (2014) Guiding Bolt too good for a level 1 cleric spell?

It is only marginally better and by 5th level the wizard is the clear master of spell damage. My only overarching thought here in this thread is that the wizard is not the clear master of spell damage at levels 1-4. You could make a case the cleric is equal if not marginally better in this one...

Oh right the level 18 and level 20 Wizard class features. Uh huh.

D&D 5E (2014) Guiding Bolt too good for a level 1 cleric spell?

It seems to be the best 1st level damage spell... Guiding Bolt 4d6 + advantage on next attack on hit Inflict Wounds 3d10 on hit Burning Hands 3d6 15' cone save for 1/2 Thunderwave each creature adjacent to you takes 2d8 and 10' push away on failed save, save negates Magic Missile 3d4+3 + auto...

D&D 5E (2014) Legends and Lore July 28: Keeping it Classy

I feel the exact same way. My house rules for 3e allowed them to use any weapon and gave them bonus damage in lieu of unarmed damage bonus.

    5e basic house rules

This is the game, and I have a real concern with keeping it simple. So I am trying to tease that out of it. Class Features for instance, I wanted players to have more ability to vary their class features. That is important for me. This accomplishes that. The skill changes are for two reasons...

The 5e HP and HD variant thread

This works out very closely to what I use in my 3e games. 1/2 HD +2. With the wizard getting d6 they are not completely gimped. So something like d6-2 is fathomable. I like.

The 5e HP and HD variant thread

Have at it. Throw your ideas and we can critique them. Here is the first. Hit Dice are not used. Short Rest: Recover Hit Points (½ of current?) Long Rest: Recover all Hit Points

    D&D 5E (2014) Would a Sha'ir be a sorcerer or a warlock?

I think I agree with you. As I was writing it I was sort of falling that way. I hope I can theme a warlock as a Sha'ir out of the gate.
