D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's less that they don't do testing is that the zeitgeist and mentality of D&D is that it is "an art and not a science" and that "tables can fix the simple stuff". So rarely do designers bludgeon the rules with the results of the surveys and testing. So a lot of "looks correct" , "matches how...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I don't think that's true. One group wants it to be hard to recover to 100% if you have 6 encounters One group wants you to have 100% power every fight but only have 2 encounters.. It seems the obvious solution is restrictions on the recharge/recovery mechanic. Everyone only gets X uses of...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I fear that many designers are too afraid to kill sacred cows, forge new paradigms, and upset vocal subcommunities to create strong design goals and stick to them when things they don't like don't neatly fit in them It's less then not playtesting right and more being unwilling to use what the...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

One houserules I pondered is the idea of having your magic reset would be on the same cooldown as your hit die maximum reset. Meaning characters would have their normal maximum hit points and their hit die maximum it points. The hit point maximum would be how much hit points they had if all of...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Not all the subclass features use resources. The idea is to rejigger PCs to be slightly stronger but lock 25% of their power behind a multi day gate. THEN Make current monster stat be their 75% form and let them get 20-50% stronger if you take that multiple day rest. If a table wants to just...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

That's essentially what my 4 rests suggestion is trying to back into You get only 75% power with 1 day rest. You need multiple days at a peaceful place to recharge back to 100%. You can leave town at 100%. You can only get back to 100% by getting back to town and staying their many days. If...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It would be a tough sell because D&D fans hate change. But we already have many classes that are already limited to 4 or less features. It's still one just with 4 recharge times. The hope is that if the PCs use the last 2 types of rests, the DM can boost the boss. You long rest and the...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

MORE /kyloren The benefit is your table can base its game around the rests it likes. You streamline every PC down to 4 or less features A Barbarian has 3 rages. You regain 0 rage with a breather. You regain 1 rage with a respite. You regain all rage with a night's rest. You get +CON mod...

D&D General Refresher Course D&D Edition Numbers. AKA Modern D&D Is a Self Inflicted Problem.

My point was 4e was a Healing Surge Attrition game not a HP Attrition game. Every 2 encounters you got an action point and an magic item recharge. So You could do on "forever" offensively but you quit when your HS get low. Draw Steel copies this style as you get Victories as you lose...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Perhaps doubling the amount of rests is a solution A 5 minute A 1 hour A multiple hour rest A multiple day rest Then some resources could only be restored in downtime, meaning bosses have downtime as well.

D&D General Refresher Course D&D Edition Numbers. AKA Modern D&D Is a Self Inflicted Problem.

I disagree with 4E. 4E mainly used healing surges as its adventuring day resource. Battles were assumed that every PC used their at-wills and encounter powers and some using dailies. The power of dailies are muted until high levels when each PC can use multiple Dailies. The issue with 5e is...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Nah the other way I'm not talking about Ranger/Paladin right now. I'm talking about the Gish. The way I would do it is heavy spell that lets you attack five times. You cast it it gives you temporary haste which allows you to attack five times. You cast another spell that lets you attack...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's that they didn't have power players. It's more the 5e was designed for the sensibilities of old school dungeoneers. It's just like how they were shocked during the design of Tasha's that somebody will want to play an orc wizard and not play a stereotypical race class combination. D&D 5e...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

I used Ezra because she is a good example of weapon and especially armor buffs as she casts spells to swap armor. And many Bleach shikai and bankai are pretty much D&D spells that only warrior types could effectively use as you often attack to use many of them or are just bizarre weapons.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Your Who explains it all. D&D is so old and big there are fans very familiar with new media and some not at all You could have 2 groups arguing whether Asta is a Gish and a 3rd group completely lost.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

The Gish should use weapon. The easiest way to describe how a Gish uses magic is they increase the range or damage of a melee strike. Ashton Anchors Ezra Scarlet Byakuya Kuchuki Shazam/Black Adam More mystical version of Aquaman and Aqualad I mean you could do it with ranger if you actually...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Artillerist ist a warrior as well. The fantasy nor the mechanics of 5e artificer is of a weapon user. That's why it fails to fill the Gish desire.
