D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

It's more... 5e was designed on vibes after 4e was designed with a purpose and people reject it because it didn't have the correct vibes. To have NPCs that can use PC logic you have to design your NPC system and PC system together. Think of it like 4e a monster roles. If we say that PCs are...

    D&D General Ditching Archetypes 6E?

That's why I did it as 5 choices. At level one you only have to pick your origin. But you get Subclass, Specialty, Paragon Path/Prestige Class, Epic Destiny for 4 more choices.

    D&D General Ditching Archetypes 6E?

I think we should go back to the Speciality idea in DnD next where you can get a set list of feats in a row. Like you choose a Origin at level 1. Then a Subclass at level 3, and get features at level A, B, and C. Then a Specialty at level 4 and get set feats at levels D, E, and F Then a Paragon...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Nah. It's way to predictable. That's all I've been saying. Think think of it as on the monster end. In 5e the PCS play and run exactly how you don't want a DM to run a monster nor build an encounter.

    D&D General Stretching Bounded Accuracy?

Saves But 200% armor A 10-20 range offers little to go and little challenge. Especially when everyone really stats at 13.

    D&D General Stretching Bounded Accuracy?

The problem isn't the Bounded Accuracy. It was the Bounded DC. If you Proficiency can go up by +4 and could be doubled and you Ability mod could go up be +5 but your DCs only go from 10 to 20 normally, you are going from +0 to +17 on one side and DC 10 to DC 20 from the other. Moving from 17...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

You think more PCs would solve the the problem of TSR PCs were a lot weaker offensively compared to their defense at lower levels. Then their offense to defense cranks up hard mid to high levels. But since humaniods at or past mid were rare, you could throw low level PCs at enemies and not...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

It might look that way. But PCs are too skewed. Basically, if a PC can survive the targeted offence of a party of four, it's offense is so high it's gonna TPK them. Basically you'd have to blatantly and obviously pull punches to run a PC against a PC party who'd have enough defenses to last...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Too squishy or wimpy for fun use. I already explained it. PCs on the monster side punch way WAY higher than their defense. They aren't fun to use because they are not even glass cannons, they are paper cannons. PCs deal a bunch of damage then instantly die NPCs modeled after PCs are more...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Exactly. The 2014 CR 12 Archmage was just a 15 AC, 99 HP PC wizard with no subclass. The 2025 CR Archmage is a Arcane Bursting 17 AC, 170 HP NPC Mage with spells Using 2025 CR/Damage it's suppose to be doing ~90 Damage and ~200 HP 2014 Archie's Dagger is 4 damage (lol) 2014 Archie's Cone of...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

PC defences don't keep up with offence. If you meet Offence CR, they are too squishy If you meet Deence CR, they are too wimpy

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

NPC can't hit hard enough fast enough NOR take hits enough fast enough using PC rules past CR 5 or so. Once you accept it, the dread lessens.

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

It can... But it would end up like the game Battle Brothers where everyone is wielding a spear or pike.

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

One of my gripes with bounded accuracy is that larger weapons should have a bonus to attack rolls and AC. Like +1 for longswords and the like, +2 for great weapons, and +3 for reach weapons. And if bump up shields from +2 to +4 compensate.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

That's the other reason why I want the 4th book. I want there to be both the option for DMs to hand out pre-made legacy items, roll or create "generic" 3e/4e/PF style items, or hand out items of special materials. So a DM can put either a Flametongue +2 longsword fiery, anarchic longsword...

You replace them with more important stuff In the PHB More subclasses More subraces More feats More backgrounds More equipment in the DMG Monster creation rules Spells creation and expectations rules Subclass create rules Advice on How to DM for each Class Variant rules Epic play rules

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

The old way does already because it shoves bigger more important content in supplements My way, you get 6-8 subclasses per class, more backgrounds and more feats in the PHB and monster creation rules in the DMG.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I still think the PHB has too many spells and the DMG has too many items hogging up pages. Like the PHB wizard spell list should go old school. 8 spells per level except 0th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 1 spell for each school past 3rd. That's it. Everyone else gets only ~5-6 spells per level. Cut it...
