    I don't like "back antlers"

We actually considered doing this very thing with the dragons in the Bestairy, but we decided against it and to keep the 10 classic dragons mostly because that's the way it's ALWAYS been in the game. But that doesn't mean that dragons have to be so similar that you can only tell them apart by...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

That's actually okay, though, I think, if hydras are now a little or even a fair amount easier to defeat if you use the right tactics. They do an INCREDIBLE amount of damage for their CR, after all, so if they have a glass jaw against a foe who knows how to hit them where it hurts, that's fine.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

Wanna hear the stupid reason why this happened? Originally, the hydra had a Dex of 13. But then, at the semi last minute, there was a decision to make sure that all monsters in the book had 3 odd and 3 even ability scores, so that the idea would be that all monsters have a base of 10, 10, 10...

Correct; the annis is in the bonus bestiary. Although I don't think it'll show up in Bestiary II, since we've still got PLENTY of Bonus Bestiaries in stock. There's no fear of that product going away anytime soon.

EXCELLENT! Now go forth and smite from this green world the blasphemous back antlered heathens!! GO!!!

    I don't like "back antlers"

I kind of agree there. We lumped 11 or so of these boring animals into the Familiars section because wizards and sorcerers DO need stats for their critters... but the vast majority of the animals we stat up in the Bestairy are the kinds that can bite and eat you. I'm actaully pretty proud of...

    I don't like "back antlers"

Not all campaign settings are the same. If, for example, you want to run a game set in George Martin's world, animals are pretty much it for "monsters" to fight, and we don't want to exclude that kind of game. Or for that matter, read some Conan stories. Conan was ALWAYS fighting animals...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

OH! Oh oh oh. You're talking about the online PRD... duh. I for some reason had it in my head you were talking about the downloadable PDF of the Bestiary. I'll have the web guys fix the errors in the PRD; that should be a relatively easy thing to get done. Thanks for pointing them out though...

Hmm... I suspect this might be a problem with a PDF reader. I just downloaded the file off paizo.com here and all of those tables look fine to me... I checked with Adobe Acrobat and with Preview. Does it show up as just large blank pages on the page or something? What PDF readers are you using?

We might be statting up some of those variants in another bestariy some day if folks are interested in it; we'll certainly be statting them up in adventures now and then. That said... isn't part of the fun about being the GM the "some assembly required" part of the game? It is for me, at least...

Because wolves don't have claw attacks.

Which tables are those? If you mean that the tables don't go beyond 20th level... that was partially a necessary evil to fit everything in the book. It's possible to extend those tables beyond CR 20 with the application of logic and a bit of work, and some day we'll publish an extended table...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

The monster advancement rules are as simple or as complex as you want them to be, frankly. We've removed the "Advancement" line from each monster as a way to encourage GMs to advance monsters however they want. The Bestiary has a rather large appendix that talks about how you build an entirely...

    2 New Classes Announced

No; we won't be playtesting the monster books. And we won't be playtesting the Gamemastery Guide. We'll probably be limiting our public playtests to one or MAYBE two of the hardcover books a year, and are unlikely to publicly playtest the entire book. For the Advanced Player's Guide, the plan...

There are eight "dinosaurs" in the book: ankylosaurus, brachiosaurus, deinonychus, elasmosaurus, pteranodon, stegosaurus, triceratops, and tyrannosaurus.

    Question on multiple attacks

Correct; the use of an "or" in an attack line is in there to indicate it's a different series of attacks that isn't compatible. In the balor's case, he can either make his numerous attacks with his sword and whip as a full attack, or he can drop/put away his weapons and make his slam attacks...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

Actually, we use/reference that book a LOT for Pathfinder stuff. Several of the demon lords mentioned in that book (Flauros, Nocticula, Shax, Socothbenoth, Abraxus, etc.) have pretty huge roles in Golarion, in fact. Not all of them, since we wanted to build our own collection of demon lords. We...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

This Bestiary is very much intended to capture the feel of the core monster experience (AKA: The 3.5 MM). That said, there are a couple of monsters from Pathfinder and the modules in here, like the boggard, the shaitan genie, and the goblin dog. I suspect we'll be doing another Bestiary down...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

Many of them do... in the interests of keeping the Bestiary 100% open content, we only mentioned those demon lords etc. who are from mythology or already open content; all of these guys are in Golarion, but they're not Golarion-only.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

Yeah; the demon lords and arch devils and stuff are just names in the Bestiary; we've got the Book of the Damned line of books dedicated to talking about them themselves (we don't currently have plans to stat them up, but if/when we do, they'll be CR 26–36 or thereabouts).
