Who are the really interesting modern TTRPG designers?

I'll give a shout out to Kevin Kulp, most recently the co author of Swords of the Serpentine. He has a gift for writing rules-light versions of Gumshoe games.

Social Encounters: Does it Matter What and How PCs Speak to NPCs?

I've never been in a game where increased IC roleplay (whatever this is) was worse than OOC 3rd party description. So my TL/DR answer is yes. However, the goal of roleplaying at the table should never discourage talking about things OOC. Sometimes 30 seconds of clarification can avoid two hours...

Setting Design: As Written, GM Homebrew, or Group Collaboration?

The benefits of group collaboration on a setting outweigh any disadvantages. But the degree that a setting needs tinkering is always one of personal choices.

    Good RPG Reads?

If you like horror, the Delta Green material is fantastic.

How Visible To players Should The Rules Be?

System mastery is an enjoyable part of a game for some players.

How important are and RPG's aesthetics to you?

If I am buying something primarily as inspiration, I care less about graphics since I'll probably be using a tablet. But I do think art has a greater effect on me nowadays.

What makes a "bad GM" or a "bad player"?

For me a bad GM is inconsistent. Their application of the rules is unreliable, regardless of whether it's due to inexperience or insistence to stay on the plot. A bad player doesn't care about the fun of his fellow players, especially if called out about it. I suppose this applies to GMs too.

    Grading the Genesys System

When he wrote The Yellow King RPG, Robin Laws changed the combat system into one that has the players identify their goal (defeat the foe/capture the foe/run away/et c) and has each participant make a single roll towards it. This would be an interesting use of the Genesys system, in a similar...

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

GURPS WW2 Weird War Two - odd title, but great book. Packed to the rafters with useful stuff for any 20th Century campaign.

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

The d20 framework gave publishers an incentive to use it for everything at the same time you noticed the opinions. Prior to that, Steve Jackson and Chaosium weren't necessarily trying to push their universal roll-under systems into competition for D&D players. And as Crimson Longinus notes...

    Grading the Genesys System

I have played in several campaigns, plus a Star Wars demo where we were rebels with no Force powers. I like the second axis of threat/advantage, although the rules don't really use the latter mechanically outside of combat or chases IIRC. I think a stricter mechanical use in other instances...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

My point is that roll under and roll over are not opposites. The probabilities may be the same, but the mechanics are fundamentally different. I don't think it makes a difference in a percentile system if you are modifying the roll or the range. Whether you focus on zero or the target number...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

I like the Delta Green system, which is blackjack plus doubles is a critical success/failure.

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

Unless you are letting these modifiers dip results into the negatives - which becomes the exact same system as roll high! - you will need to take steps to keep the results as close to the positive side of zero as you can. Making a lot of modifiers ultimately worthless. 5th edition essentially...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

Especially since 1990, the games that have drawn the most players into the hobby are roll high systems. That's going to be a default for a vast majority of people.

What Mechanics or Systems Do You NEED?

A core activity and a means to emulate it. Useful character differentiation with a minimum of descriptors.

What's the difference between AI and a random generator?

A random generator is limited by the content its creator provides. I assume the AI has a set of instructions that tells it where to look, but it could be pretty far-reaching. The consent issue is a tricky one, because the AI can do what a human can do, just much faster.

Sting wrote "Shape of My Heart" with similar symbology. It ran in the end credits of The Professional IIRC.
