The only difference is that levels give improvements in chunks rather than piecemeal. A point buy system is just as much a tool for comparison.

Musing on Conan themes in RPGs

My point is that he progresses in power and influence chronologically.

Musing on Conan themes in RPGs

He may not get more powerful as gamers picture it, but Conan starts off as a thief and becomes a king. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the intent of the original D&D rules whereby PCs become rulers after a time. If a character is increasing in "abilities/talents/etc." it's a level system by...

Which game has your favorite magic system?

My favorite was the d20 Modern ritual system supplemented by the occult correspondences of GURPS Cabal.

    What is a "Narrative Mechanic"?

I infer that "narrative" means the players - as opposed to the GM - are adding detail to the game that falls largely their character's control. And "mechanic" implies that the scope of these additions are limited or defined by the rules of the system.

Musing on Conan themes in RPGs

Swords of the Serpentine has a good mechanic for the treasure acquisition portion of this idea. You accumulate loot during play in the form of an abstract Wealth rating. You must spend 1-5 points on your lifestyle between adventures (the excess can be used for other things). When you spend...

    Favorite superhero RPGs?

He's a goofy villain in the Marvel universe with powers that translate even more poorly into a game. My point was that the game's focus on comic book logic would make a fight against him entertaining regardless of the power level of the heroes that oppose him.

    Favorite superhero RPGs?

I've never seen stats for Stilt Man anywhere else.

    Favorite superhero RPGs?

The Sentinel Comics RPG is the best superhero comics game I have played (among V&V, Champions, TMNT, & the original FASERIP and DC games) But it is important that it tries to emulate comics as opposed to the supers genre as a whole. It handled two tests better than any game I knew: 1) someone...

    Is "GM Agency" A Thing?

Illusionism is typically defined as "the encounter happens regardless of what the players decide." But this GM didn't have an encounter in mind. It sounds like he was responding to the actions of the players. Regarding the main question [sorry], the GM has the ultimate agency to decide to GM in...

What Licensed RPG Do You Wish Used A Different System?

You might want to take a look at Sentinel Comics, then ;)

    What is "Prep"?

I don't see why it wouldn't include meditation if it helped you in the next session. Even watching movies can help if they give you inspiration.

Do Random Tables Reduce Player Agency?

I don't see how unless the chart is inherently unfair in some way.

What Licensed RPG Do You Wish Used A Different System?

I was sold on the Sentinel Comics RPG after seeing a thread on Marvel & DC characters converted to this system. I've never seen one that could accommodate Batman, the Flash, and Superman in a PC party as easily as it can.

What have you done for your DM/GM at the end of a campaign?

We tell them "leave the head of the table and let someone else DM." Unless he is running the next game.

    Grade the Savage Worlds System

As a math nerd I dislike the exploding dice more than I should. I bought Tour of Darkness sight unseen when it dropped. It's an almost perfect balance of campaign and setting, and the other books tend to be as good.

    On Running a Horror Game

I hope I am a service-oriented GM, but I run games I want to run. The parameters of those games are spelled out beforehand, and if they are challenged in play after being accepted in Session Zero I should have the right to note this. It puts a lot of onus on a GM to change the framework of...

    On Running a Horror Game

I think the GM and players need to be on the same page. If the former is expecting a X of Cthulhu game of investigation and risking horror to fight it, and the PCs run from their ability to do so, both sides will be dissatisfied.
